I am rubbish at painting. I'm also rubbish at getting myself to paint. So I figured I would start this blog as a way of forcing myself to keep up with painting a savage Orc army ready for the next edition of fantasy. My plan is to create a 2000pt army consisting of approximately 130 savage Orc boys, three characters and a giant. I chose this army as they look a little Palaeolithic, which is the time period I study. So to start with here is my test model.

Apparently having this going is really helping me to get painting, I managed one more boy today, and plan to spend a few hour painting tomorrow so should finish most of the first rank by tomorrow. If anyone sees this and knows of a way to get a realistic Flint look on the stone weapons, I would really appreciate it if you would be able to share it with me, as despite the stone axe head looking alright, by my painting ability at least, I would like it to be coloured a bit more accurately. I've included a close up of what I've achieved with the axe head so far.

Nice work on the Savage Boyz, from what I can see. if you can take them in better light, maybe with a sheet of paper behind them it will enhance your photos a great deal. The flint looks good. The only suggestions I could make would be to - purely optionally - add a touch of light brown weathering powder mixed with matte varnish in a couple of spots if you want the grey-brown look that some flint has.
Have you seen Shieldwolf's Mountain Orcs? They're a good and affordable way to bulk out and vary the models in a Savage Orc force. Their heads are quite different, but that can be gotten around by swapping spare GW orc heads in.

Thank you for your comment. I will try and find some better light to take the photos, or at least maybe a second torch. Thank you so much for the tip about the flint, I'll have to try and get hold of some matte varnish and the powder, is there any brands you would recommend? Pretty much all my painting supplies are from GW, and I'm fairly sure they don't stock either. And also I'll have to take a look at the Shieldwolf models

Very nice work so far - I agree that having a P&M blog going can really help keep your painting momentum going.
Do you have any plans for the bases?

Thank you. its bizarre just how much it's helping right now
Right now I'm not too sure, my plan is to wait until I have had a few games and then try and base them so that they match the tables I'll be playing on most. It frustrates me more than it should when you play on a snow board with grass themed bases and vice versa.

Vallejo Pigments should be pretty easy to get hold of. I've got quite a few of those, as well as MiG and Kromlech. All are very good to use and effective. A single "white" or "cold" LED globe in a lamp can make a big difference (and is a good thing to have in your paint lamp anyway)
I've also found that having a P&M blog helps a lot with motivation. I think a big part of it is being able to more-or-less immediately show off your work for feedback to other people who can appreciate it outside of your own home.

@Azazelx, brilliant, thank you for the tips and recommendations, looks like I should be able to nip into Wayland Games at some point and get some pigment and varnish.
So this morning I managed to get three more orc's painted, as well as buying another 10, meaning I now have 35 boys in need of painting. But yeah here's the photos of the newly painted ones, as well as a group shot of the five painted so far

Sorry for the multiple posts, I haven't worked out how to upload multiple files at once without them all becoming the same image

Looking good! The problem I find with a lot of P&M blogs is that they make me want to go paint the thing I've been looking at, and with them all lined up, you're making me want to go grab the half-painted Savage Boyz out of the case they've been hiding in for years to get them done. Someday...
I've also got to buy a couple of the new plastic GW kits as well, clearly.

Three more done today, also managed to build another 10 boys, giving me 40 so far built, including two command groups.
