Thought I'd actually try a blog thread for my current army project - A 1500pt Salamanders army!

Aiming to make these some of the best models I've painted, so putting a little extra effort in. Going for Forge World Mark IV heads/torsos (the Red Scorpions conversion kit gives pretty good value) and Dark Arts lava bases.

The "fluff" for my army is a small but battle-hardened force accompanying Vulkan He'Stan in his search for chapter relics, I'm giving all the tac marines terminator honour shoulder pads to try and indicate some kind of veteran status, also to avoid too much shoulder pad freehand .

My first finished squad is a 5-man unit of scouts with Pig Iron heads (HATE the plastic scout heads, but the rest of the models are great):


On the painting table at the moment is an AOBR Dreadnought (WIP), tarted up with some FW brass Salamanders symbols:


After that I have lined up my first 5 Tactical marines:


Then a Rhino:


Also worth showing a pic of is my Vulkan He'Stan model that I bought on eBay a couple of years ago - No idea who sculpted it, but I love it - I have now replaced the head with a FW Mark IV head to tie in with the rest of the force:



Hoping that FW bring out a CC variant of the Tartaros terminator armour, as they will tie in beautifully with the rest of my Mark IV marines...

Finished the 1st Dreadnought:

Very cool stuff - the Salamanders have a great fluff and your models are definitely doing it justice so far! Keep it up.

The pig iron heads are a really good fit for the scouts too (their heads work well for IG vets, but don't seem to work for Space Marines.

Really well painted i have seen lots of salamanders armies spring up recently, but this is one of the better ones, keep going

Know how you feel nifty idea for the Scout heads have to admit they definitely benefit from it far more than the Cadians.

I do the same thing, but trying to stick to my wolves till i have at least a legal painted force, looking forward to more updates

However I got back into the swing tonight and got some more work done on the Rhino, still a fair bit left to do though...

I concur, that a flipping great. I'd go as far as saying that is the coolest looking SM squad I think I have ever seen.

I would hazard a guess, that this might be somehow related to your Vulkan? Nice looking stuff here btw. look forwards to seeing more from you.

Mini-update - Been slow going but Dread #2 is prolly 2/3 finished, hopefully have finished pics to show off soon...

Very nice lava effects. Its also nice to see more helmet scout marines. They cant always go to battle without a helmet of sorts, especially in hazardous environments

Haven't really had any time for painting owing to parental responsibility and general sleepiness

I have, however, managed to assemble the next 5 marines, and the Land Raider with added bling from Chapterhouse and Forge World brass:

Well, the mini-Slinky is now 2 months old, things are settling down a bit and I've managed to get the brushes out

Dreadnought #2 is complete:



Next up, 5 more Tac marines to complete Tac squad #1 - Hopefully the next update will be a bit sooner this time

Forgot to mention, had a slight panic last week when my ancient pot of Citadel Hobgoblin Orange (bought in about 1990 ) finally proved unusable (turns out there was a tear in the lid so it had dried out enough to be beyond saving). This was one of the main colours I was using for the lava bases

Got a pot of "Fire Dragon Bright", which seems a close enough match. Phew.

Yep, I highly recommend them, and the painting tutorial on their website really helped me out too

Next up, Land Raider (lascannon pattern as I felt my army needed a bit more long-range firepower).
