I have been out of 40k for a couple of years, and thinking of getting back in. I see this as an opportunity to get into Nids, Always liked them but never taken the plunge.
Anyway this post to see if anyone has any experience or opinion on a colour scheme. I'm thinking of keeping the nids in theme with the same colour armour, or plating, whatever you call it. but having a mix of "flesh" colour. maybe even bright colours, like red, green, blue etc, with the plating being a range of grey to black.
Any thoughts? let me know, tried something similar? let me see!
Thanks in advance!

Welcome back!
I love my nids!
Nids are fun to paint - as you have a lot of freedom in schemes.
Commonly, nids have a few color "areas"
Carapace (the shell)
Body or "muscle"
Teeth / claws / talons / hoofs
glands/mucus/ poinson sacks etc.
Some even differentiate between hard body (the ribs for example) and more soft tissue (arm muscles).
These all offer different areas to paint.
I would say, think about either a "theme" or some example creatures.
Themes would be -
Earthy tones, ice/frost colors, metallics, etc.
Example creatures would be seeing if there is anything in nature that you like and think would look cool.
Examples - reptiles (like turtles, dinosaurs, etc.), or maybe crustaceans, or any variety of insect (bazillion color choices there).
For example, my own nids, I wanted the shells to look like a bug type shell (think a roach or a crab) and then went with a compatible green color for the skin parts, etc.
I have seen amazing nids where the shells were painted like colorful insects with neat patterns. Others have bugs that are all in earthy like tones (dark brown shells, lighter "fleshy" skin, etc.).

My color scheme (in my blog linked below) is pretty simple. Bone on teeth, claws, spikes, armor plates. Black on the body. Brown on the weapons/hooves. Blue on the gooey bits and accents. So eyes, tongues, devourer heads, inside membrane of wings is all blue.
Give it a look. It's simple and I don't have the greatest ever looking models but they are above table top standard and I think they are good enough.

Ok, test models are go. I would love some feedback on my base coat, if you would care to share your thoughts.
One has a lighter green with agrax wash, and one has darker green with agrax wash. which do you prefer?

Lighter, better contrast, will stand out more on the table.
