So this is the first 40k unit I have done. Not completed I know it needs touch ups. I know it not a popular model but I picked it up cheap. I am waiting to do the paper work cause I have a calligraphy class coming up that I thought might help as I was not pleased with my first attempts. Also no edge highlighting as I can not seem to get it right. Any good tutorials? Sorry my camera is not the best.

Looks great for your first attempt, and the picture is clear enough. My only question: Is he of African descent, and I just can't tell, or is his face literally black?

Great for a first attempt.

Did you do a wash over the entire model or just a few parts? Some of the details look like they could benefit from a wash, such as the gold parts.

Highlighting is tough and takes practice. You can overdo the highlights if you want it to really pop on the table top, but then of course it won't look as good if you inspect it close up. It all depends on the style you like.

I'm not really crazy about the gray face. It makes him look a bit like a statue.

Thanks, I Will add a layer of wash. I will flesh up the face too. I tried to edge highlight a death company marine and did not like the way it turned out. Thanks for the input.

If your death co marine has a jump pack, highlighting boxy objects like that is actually a bit easier. You can use the edge of the brush (not the tip) almost perpendicular against the edge you are highlighting. Obviously that will not work for rounded parts like the shoulder pad. That just takes practice and a lot of patience.

Another thing you can try is adding a "glaze" paint over your highlight. GW specifies their glaze paints on the product (Base, layer, wash, glaze, etc). It will blend it a bit more, but also tone down the highlight.
