So lets see your alternative Heldrakes.

I am looking to build one myself but the ol' Google machine yields results that are less than.

I am unsure of which route I want to go. The Heldrakes fluff is rather uninspiring I find and so I'm leaning more towards either a huge flying demon or an actual fighter craft.

I would rather do a giant demon because I think that fits the bill better for my own tastes rather than an aircraft. Though both have their merits I suppose.

Also looking to build most of it myself, being a chronic miser and all!

I'd cruise the local thrift shops looking for something to base it on. Buy a GW flying stand and cover it in that clay you've been using and you'll be well on your way to a Nurgle drake.

Maulerfiend + zombie dragon= win

Or just the zombie dragon model as flying plus a few armor pieces.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

Had a quick buzz through the thrift shop and didn't see anything that stood out as prime material.

I'd like to avoid just copying someone else's idea for this project, though I realize there is a lot of variation with that route.

I really not sure how I ought to go about it. I know my old friend darwi will come along for the ride. But really I just need to have a look at what is out there.

darkcloak, which flavour of chaos is your army? E.g. a Nurgle Heldrake could look very different to a Tzeench Heldrake or an Iron Warriors Heldrake...

Oh derp! Clang, I am going for a Nurgle army. If you want a little preview of what the Heldrake will be fitting into have a look at my thread The Encrusty.

You know I may just say screw it and buy the Heldrake used and work the darwi magic on it. It can't be that awful a model can it?

No, feth that! I hate the fluff. Airplanes turning into Dragons? Pluh.

Maybe I ought to demonize a plane? The only problem with that is portraying the vector strike ability, though arguably you could call it Vector Bombing and glue a warhead on there....

How about an appropriately sized Insecticon on a flight stand?

I have no idea how big that one is though.

This what the vampire dragon and a maulerfiend look like together. Well, one of the ways. I stole the general idea and then used my own ideas.

To me, a flying Nurgle beasty would either be some sort of rotting undead dragon-ish beast, or a bloated gas-filled floating monstrosity, like a giant version of a blight drone: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Chaos/DAEMONS_AND__BEASTS/NURGLE-BLIGHT-DRONE.html

Personally I'd try for the latter, half rusted dirigible and half gas-filled blistered daemonic flesh with dangling tentacles..

But the minimum effort option would be to just buy the Heldrake and rust it up. If you search for Heldrake conversion pics, some people have done some nice things with the basic kit to greatly reduce the mechanical dragon look.

Thanks for all the replies folks!

That maulerdrake looks very sick! Good work!

However... I found it. I found my Heldrake and no one is going to say no to it...

A little bit of Nurgle Lovin' and I don't see how anyone can complain, especially since... Plus it only cost me $10! How can you beat that?

Especially since its Batman!

All the pieces looked to be there too! The baggie was still sealed and none of the loose sprues looked to have any bits missing. I even got a Batman decal! Lol!

I am super stoked to build this thing...

Even comes with a Batman flight stand!

Unboxed!

Wow, I just realized how awesome chrome plating was back in the day, a little wash and that will look absolutely stunning!

I wish I had some glue, I'd start building right now!

The chrome bits are supposed to peek through the rows of holes in the wings? Hmm, if you can paint/wash it to look like warp energy or daemonic plasma or whatever, fine, otherwise I'd be covering up that chrome.

As the base for a conversion, I don't hate this model at all, but personally I'd be doing everything I could to disguise its batty origins, especially that bat-wing tail fin. Unless of course you have a Batman-themed army

Lol well said!

At any rate since this is now claimed by Nurgle I'll be chatting about this leg of the project over in The Encrusty thread!
