Hello and welcome to my world of Malifaux.

This blog is going to be my continuing adventures in the Malifaux world starting from the very beginning.

I've painted up two crews ready for my first game The Latigo Posse (Perdita) and No Shelter Here (Pandora). You can follow my painting in my blog linked in my sig if you are interested, pics also in my gallery.

So I tried to read the rules over the last few nights ready for my first game and found it very difficult to understand, I think I'm getting too old for learning new games It doesn't help that I keep falling a sleep while trying to read the book

Today I decided to just play and see what happened there will be mistakes as that's part of learning so please point them out and yes I'm playing against myself as per normal in my other game threads. You may question how easy it is to hide my hand from myself, well its kind of working enough that I'm enjoying myself. I also don't have the proper cards that that wasn't easy going, I'm going to pick up the new starter though as that will make things much easier

For my first game I went as small as possible with 15ss.

Candy vs Francisco Ortega 15ss

Candy vs Francisco Ortega 15ss

The table looks like this, tape measure represents the end of the board edge.

The Crews

Neverborn
Candy
Sorrow x3

The Guild
Francisco Ortega
Santiago Ortega
Nino Ortega

The mission was Turf War which is represented by the dragon statue in the middle of the table. This also shows the setup with Nino taking advantage of From the Shadows.

Other strategies

Candy
Make them Suffer
Break Through

Francisco
Plant Evidence
Protect Territory

Turn one

Spoiler:
And so we begin Turn one with Nino sat happily in his building shooting away at the Sorrows and puting a wound on one and two on another.

Other than that people wondered forwards.

Candy took two of the Sorrows behind a building to hide from Nino and his big ass gun. While the last Sorrow ambled forward to contest the turf around the dragon statue.

Turn two

Spoiler:
Francisco's gang really sucked at shooting this turn and just failed to hit anything, they did however place two stratgems marked by white dice (I need to find something to represent these).

Candy's crew spent the turn getting into position Misery Love Company ability is quite cool I don't really know if you can use it to go up into buildings but it made sense that you could. Now in position they are ready for combat next turn and some Life Leaching, just need to get the third Sorrow in the mix and the wounds will start flying off.

Turn Three

Spoiler:
Things really changed this turn, Candys gang won the initiative and the last sorrow Misery Loves Companied himself in front of Francisco ready for some serious Life Leaching to start but Santiago wasn't have any of it and fired two shot technically into combat but he cant hit his own Family and he took out both Sorrows with 4 damage each.

Then Nino took a beating from the Sorrow in base to base with him but managed to push off afterwards and shoot back for the kill. I ended the game here as I didn't think Candy could do much by herself. without much of a ranged attack.

Really though I noticed that Nino should have died when he activated due to Life Leach but I'll leave that as a lesson learned.

So there we have my first game with a victory to the Guild.

After thoughts.
Spoiler:

What should have been a quick game actually took about 3 hours, learning the main card mechanic was a bit of a head sore after playing dice based games. I'm still learning I know I got some things wrong and had questions at the end like what does the symbol after the ram mean for Headshot on the back of Nino's card? and what is the symbol in front of the number on the Sorrows card represent for the Misery ability, I cant actually make it out.

I have come away really positive though and wanting to find out what other abilities other minis have, I started looking to see what models for Neverborn have ranged weapons because Nino is going to be a pain in the behind I can tell.

Next game will be with the same crew maybe later this week then I'll wait until I have the starter set before I try using the Masters.

Thanks for reading and I hope it was interesting for you.

Cool battle report, I look forward to more! I just have to say that that is one of my favorite candy models I've seen; the hopscotch outline is perfect.

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

Great report. It's nice to have pictures, as opposed to a wall of text.

Although, in all honesty, I'm not surprised the Ortegas won. Most of their abilities should be 0 actions and at low levels they really shine. As much as I love the Pandy crew, it really needs to be played at 25SS to shine. That lets you fit in a beatstick, which the box doesn't really have.

Malifaux masters owned: Guild(Sans McCabe), Outcasts(Sans Misaki), Arcanists(Sans Marcus)

Cheers I plan on doing the rest of the hopscotch board on Teddy's base when I pick one up unless I can find a cheap Miss Ery on ebay .

Thanks I always like to see pictures with painted minis in batreps. Yeah the Ortegas are really good at this level especially with the Family ability so they can activate two models as one activation once a turn.

Headshot requires a Ram and a Crow, meaning that to declare the Headshot trigger, you must have both in your final duel total. Nino already has the Ram built in, so you'll need to flip/cheat in a Crow to be able to use Headshot. If you have a Fate Deck made by Wyrd, each suit will match up with the design on a card. If not, there's a conversion guide in the rulebook.

That's the Aura symbol (a person in a black circle). It means that the ability affects any legal (meaning if it says enemy model, it only effects enemies) model (including the model that possess the ability if applicable) within the range listed right after the symbol. Models affected by Auras also have to be in line of sight. For the Sorrow's Misery ability, this means that enemy models that fail a Wp (Willpower) duel while also within 6 inches and line of sight of a Sorrow will suffer 1 point of damage after the action is resolved.

Good report, though I will say Nino will be more in line when you get more terrain on the board. Malifaux expects 1/3 to 1/2 the board covered in terrain, which is way more than any other game I've played. Now this doesnt necessarily mean buildings, you can have height 0 terrain like water features, rough ground, etc . But the less terrain, the more overpowered shooting models become. In general, stat bricks like the guild or 10 thunders models are also going to be harder to beat your first few games, where the raw power of massive stats can easily win out versus tricks you don't yet know how to use.

Here's a good forum post on the subject.
http://wyrd-games.net/community/topic/100508-malifaux-terrain/

in terms of Neverborn shooters, you have cant really match Nino in faction currently. You can hire Hans as a merc though. Angel Eyes from the upcoming starter set looks to add some oopmh. Tuco and Illuminated have decent ranged attacks (and Illuminated are flat out beasts in general). However there are other options, such as waldgeists which throw down terrain on demand (in addition to the more terrain you'll be sporting), or Lilitu or a Beckoner could have dragged him off the building with Lure (and hurt him in the process). Also, headshot only works if the attack deals damage. A master/henchman can soulstone to avoid damage, which is preferable to discarding them for the headshot anyways.

Nicely painted crew by the way! Pandora in particular is super tiny, so I'm always impressed by any detail on her lol.

As a minor point, there needs to be a lot more scatter terrain in a Malifaux game.

Thanks I'll try and pick up some more scatter terrain before my next game along with the new starter as well so it might be a few months before my next try at Malifaux.

Not sure if you have seen them, but the Pegasus Gotching City buildings fit the feel of the game well and are pretty inexpensive.
