Two youtube videos have sprung up on this subject and I'm curious. So the AOS rule of interest states...

"Models added to your army during the game (for example, through summoning, reinforcements, reincarnation and so on) do not count towards the number of models in the army, but must be counted among the casualties an army suffers."

So having looked at this, my feeling is that RAI is that "models that are summoned AND ARE SLAIN count as casualties". But a literal reading of the rule seems to warrant that "models that are summoned count as casualties [whether slain or not].

Thoughts?

Update from someone in youtube using German translation of AOS rules...

As I am German and as I got the German version of the rules I can definitely say what is meant: ["Modelle, die während des Spiels deiner Armee hinzugefügt werden (zum Beispiel Verstärkungen, beschworene oder wiederbelebte Modelle), zählen nicht zur Anzahl der Modelle in der Armee; wenn unter ihnen aber Verluste entstehen, so zählen diese zu deinen Verlusten."] THE LAST PART IS VERY IMPORTANT, WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY THAN THE ENGLISH VERSION AND IST 100%(!!!) CLEAR. TRANSLATED IT MEANS THE FOLLOWING: "if there occur casualties among(st) them [them = models added during the game], then they count to your casualties."

Counted "among the casualties an army suffers". Not "as casualties for the summoning army". So if an army suffers casualties, and they are summoned, they still count. It also means you can then lose over 100% casualties. Start with 1 summoner. Summon a unit of ten. Lose 5 models- 500% casualties.

Interesting to see the German translation, it would appear to be a much clearer verain of the rules and the English verion is open to interpretation.

I always thought it meant they count as dead at the end, but this make a little more sense, especially since summoned/reinforced do not count towards the overall "army" so the more summoned units you loose the bigger your loss will be IF they get killed.

so theoretically speaking, you could start with say 20 models and then over the battle SUMMON 20 models and if those summoned models all get slain you army lost 100% of its force even if it still has 20 models left.

Seeing how a German set of rules makes it quite clear, this counts as sorted, right? They count towards your casualties if/when slain. Not just because they were summoned.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I would think so yes. Personally I think it was clear that only killed off models were casualties but Im glad there is a bit more backing on that.
