In the Trenchs

Greetings Dakka,

Its been a while (haven't played in over 1.5 years) but I have now returned to bare the flag of my all time favorite faction.

After Discovering the minis though a fluke misclick while researching Age of Sigmar (I heard about it though a Gaming Podcast). I discovered that I can now play this army!

I also worked out that its one of the most economically viable for a converter like myself.

Anyway here is my 1000pt list:

+++ Skitarii + Cult Mechanicus - 1000pt +++

++ Skitarii: Codex (2015) (Skitarii Maniple) ++

+ Troops +

Skitarii Vanguard [Omnispex, 9x Skitarii Vanguard]
Vanguard Alpha [Radium carbine]

Skitarii Vanguard [Omnispex, 9x Skitarii Vanguard]
Vanguard Alpha [Radium carbine]

++ Cult Mechanicus: Codex (2015) (Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregation) ++

+ HQ +

Tech-Priest Dominus [Macrostubber, Refractor field, The Scryerskull Perspicatus, Volkite blaster]

+ Troops +

Kataphron Destroyers
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]

Kataphron Destroyers
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]
Kataphron Destroyer [Heavy grav-cannon, Phosphor blaster]

+ Heavy Support +

Kastelan Robot Maniple
Cybernetica Datasmith [Refractor field]
Kastelan Robot [Heavy phosphor blaster, Twin-linked heavy phosphor blaster]
Kastelan Robot [Heavy phosphor blaster, Twin-linked heavy phosphor blaster]

Quite basic but how viable is this in 7th edition? I have yet to get to grips with the new edition.

Well that looks like a fun list to play against...

Looks hardcore, only thing that'll give you trouble is flyers I think, and maybe hordes.

yes, but the destroyers are a kind of pseudo Anti air, sure you hit on a 6 but 18 shots per unit = 3 hits, hits immobilize vehicles so the flyer should crash and burn. Anti Hoard do you think the Kastellans are enough fire power? 12 S6 shots = 8ish hits and 2+ to wound anything less than toughness 5 (enough to force a moral check?). I am definitely grabbing an Onager at any higher points value though.

Onager would be a good addition cause they have some fancy snap shot rule I think which will help against flyers. I'd be tempted to throw it in at this points level just for some diversity.

Grav weapons you still need a 6 to pen to immobilise something. So you'll need 6s and 6s.

You've got a lot of fire power so I d'know how much hordes will trouble you.

Oh I see, I must have misread that, still you need 1 6/6 to destroy a flyer. I thing the onager could be thrown in if I made the cult detachment into an allied detachment; but does that mean I can't make my tech priest dominus my warlord?

I don't think you can immobilise zooming flyers, they just get stunned for a turn.

and yeah I don't think your warlord can come from a allied detachment.

Personally I think I'd swap the Kastelan Robots for a couple of onagers or some Ironstrider Ballistarii. You've already got lots of phosphor blasters in your army and you need some higher strength weapons I think. I'd also look into swapping vanguards for rangers.

Take the Rainment for the Dominus and then you get to snap shoot at 5+ all the time, when shooting at flyers, when over watching, etc

Great Idea actually! I can scrape 5 points off of something.

True true, but doesn't that remove anti horde capacity?

ALSO not a big fan of rangers, yes they are good but personal preference makes me lean towards vanguard so I can be very agressive. While in Range Vanguard do 50%ish more damage than rangers but rangers have more range. Trade in Trade up I guess; I might shove some in further dow the line but at the moment. Eh.

what are your kastelans doing that your kataphrons aren't already doing? I feel like you could bring something in to fill the gaps the rest dont.

TBH this is already a very strong list without many gaps, its up to you what you do.

If you prefer vanguard to ranger then fair enough, after all there's no point putting models down you don't like.

I have been mulling over an almost identical list except in mine I was looking to have one squad of breachers with the arc rifles in place of one of destroyer units. From what Ive read they serve as decent AA.

Yes they do, since your hitting on 6s having a reliable glance/pen is really nice.

ALSO welcome to dakka may your posts be long and you're threads plentiful.

I wish kataphrons were not so expensive! I'd love to take 6 instead to capitalize on the BS 2 snapshots! Incidentally are they really on 60mm bases? That's the same as an IG heavy weapons team! Since I'm going to convert ogres for my kataphrons; my ogres are going to look a little silly don't you think?

If you're willng to work with some less bodies you could always try:

5 Skitarii Vanguard (w) 2 Arc Rifles, Omnispex
5 Skitarii Vanguard (w) 2 Arc Rifles, Omnispex

1 Sydonian Dragoon (w) Taser Lance

Tech Priest Dominus (w) Raiment

3 Kataphron Destroyers (w) Plasma (or) HGC, Phosphor Blaster
3 Kataphron Destroyers (w) Plasma (or) HGC, Phosphor Blaster

Kastelan Robot Maniple (w) Carapace Mounted Heavy Phosphor Blaster

Alternatively for a bit more dedicated anti air you could always run vanilla Kastelans and make the Dragoon a Ballistarii instead at which point you could either keep the raiment and place the Dominus with a unit of Vanguard or Destroyers. Or you could swap it for an autocaducues to give the Kastelans more staying power.

Been working on some kataphron conversions that some people may find interesting.
