I bought some miniatures with partly painted bases. I was wondering if anyone knew whether the colour on the side of the base was a standard paint and if so which one?

Looks like it could be calthan brown from the old citadel paint range.

Depending on how old they are, and if the person used the GW range its either Calthan Brown as mentioned above, or Graveyard earth.

It's actually really hard to tell from pictures because the slightest change in lighting an colour balance will make a whole bunch of browns look the same.

I wouldn't even try and guess. If we assume they were using GW paints it could easily be Bestial Brown, Vermin Brown, Calthan Brown, Mournfang Brown, Skrag Brown. At a stretch it could also be Snakebite leather or Balor Brown (which are more yellow than the others I mentioned) maybe even XV88 or Terracota.

That's assuming they used a GW paint. If they might have used another brand the list grows much larger.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be inclined to just repaint them (or test what colours I have on my shelf to see if any are a perfect match).
