I was recently perusing Blick Art supply for terrain making materials and ran across two great items for modeling.

1) A bag of metal bits. This was next to the display with all the sheet and tube brass and other metals. It has a wide variety of off-cuts in different sizes, shapes and lengths.
While obviously, one eventually ends up with a scrapyard of metal bits, this has two advantages that I see: 1) a wider variety of sizes than I'd own otherwise, without needing to buy a foot long piece; and 2) it's a good starter pack of bits

2) Small helical coil spring. This is for making something that looks like ridged cable.
