Little Q & A Mr. Thorpe did

http://redthirst.co.uk/gavin-thorpe-qa-red-thirst-gaming-group/

After I finished Grudgebearer I did intend to write more books on some of the other characters – the mad engineer, for example, but the The Sundering came along and filled up my time. With the End Times upon us, I genuinely don’t know yet what kind of Warhammer novels Black Library will be looking for in the future.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

... from what BL have said -- when they used to communicate anyway -- we're maybe about half way through the HH story.

Some of that list looks like the (very) short stories that would have been put into an anthology before? Now they seem to offer a first read of something that will be combined into an anthology later, but when is guess work.

The lack of clarity around releases has made it next to impossible about understanding what is coming when compounded by the limited editions forcing some but not all of the releases to take even longer to be published.

Personally, I'd stick to the core books, read those that focus on Legions/Characters/Events that interest me, and perhaps dive into expanded stuff if it's something you're especially keen on.

I read Kharn : Eater of Worlds.

Its set after the Siege of Terra, and the World Eaters are hurting. Angron went full daemon and abandoned them, Kharn is in a catatonic state after someone(s) gave him a whoopin, and the legion is falling apart, either with pointless attacks on worlds that are on their path while the loyalists hound them, or just succumbing to the Nails.

The story follows a captain that wants to cease inter-legion killing, and the wasteful attacks on planets for no gain. There are elements of the legion that have become what we know of "today", but some aren't fully down that path yet, and it was fun seeing that distinction and how they interacted. Some don't even acknowledge Chaos gods yet. The book also features a human female, enhanced and trained by the captain to be their apothecary, that's how bad they are depleted, and an Emperor's Children Palantine Blade, who boarded their ship on Terra and has some.. enhancements .The main Astartes character, who is one of the few lucid officers left in the legion, wants to find a spot to rebuild. When they find a world, after a skirmish with Emperor's Children, Kharn names it Skalathrax.

Kharn is only in the book for about 1/3 of it, but he owns pretty much any page he's in it. He isn't full Betrayer mode yet, he's actually quite noble(for a World Eater) and kind of an elder statesman to the legion, so it'll be very interesting to see how he transforms, willingly or not, on Skalathrax in the next book.

It was easy reading, pretty straight forward, as befits the World Eaters, but still interesting. If you are jonesing for a Horus Heresy fix, this is pretty close.

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-at-bl/week-of-new-horus-heresy-quick-reads.html

Hey readers,
We have a treat for Horus Heresy fans this week: five days of new Quick Reads from the series. Each of these new stories is taken from the Death and Defiance anthology, previously only available as a hardback from blacklibrary.com.

The week of new fiction begins with a tale of the Blood Angels Legion Virtues of the Sons.

Even before the treachery of Horus is revealed, the Primarch Sanguinius fears for the future of his Legion. He seeks to teach his chosen sons the value of balance. The famed IX Legion captains Amit and Azkaellon, face Khârn of the World Eaters and Lucius of the Emperor's Children in combat. Will these encounters temper their disparate characters, or are these duels merely a prelude to the greater battle to come?

You can pick up a new Horus Heresy Quick Read each day this week, or download the full Death and Defiance eBook collection and read all five new tales today.

But that's not all!
As well as this week's new Death and Defiance eBook collection, today sees the release of another new Horus Heresy Blood Angels Quick Read.

Sins of the Father is a prequel to Virtues of the Sons and explores a ritual duel of the IX Legion, the Tempest of Angels. Sanguinius tries to teach the value of balance to his chosen sons: the renowned Captain Azkaellon and Amit the Flesh Tearer. Each embodies one aspect of their noble father, but Sanguinius knows they must become more if they are to lead the Legion after he is gone.

This story first appeared in the First Edition of the Flesh Tearers book Sons of Wrath, alongside another short story completely exclusive to that edition, Debt of Blood.

That's all for today.
Remember to check back each day this week for another Horus Heresy Quick Read from the Death and Defiance Collection.
Thanks for reading,

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Christ on a stick, when will they give it a rest with these incessant micro-mini-novella-not-a-novel things and just release some actual, you know, books.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

But with the short stories, they can come out with the full priced audio version then the full priced pdf/ebook version then include it in a printed compilation book and then a year later include it in another printed compilation book and then a year later... etc. I stopped bothering to even look at the compilations when 2 out of every 5 stories were repeats from some other compilation that I had already read. Unfortunately, it takes me about halfway through the story to figure it out definitively since some short stories involve previously covered characters from other stories by the same author.

It is pretty incredible how quickly Black Library slipped from being one of the most canny and successful publishers of genre tie-in fiction, and my favorite, to become a joke that's more sad than funny. I remember when they were expanding into Solaris and Black Flame, publishing exciting anthologies with some of the best new talent around. Now look at them.

I don't think they care (much like their parent company). As long as cutting off their nose to spite their face brings in marginally more cash, they're fine with the consequences much like GW. FW and BL used to be wholly owned subsidiaries that operated in a different way but they seem to both be converging with the way papa kirby runs things.

No, not yet.

It's been touched upon -- Guilliman has written bits of the Codex Astartes and has recently had a bit of inspiration via a red helmeted marine

There's been a few stories set post HH/Scouring era -- the aforementioned Fleshtearer book ( and the odd short story here and there) and the recent Kharn book but they've not released a full novel/series that deals with this era.

..yet.

Some info and art -- most of which has been in this thread already -- about a few future releases :

http://www.blacklibrary.com/new-at-bl/newly-revealed-art-2015.html

Hey readers,
Today we take a look at the newly revealed artwork from three upcoming titles on their way in 2015.

Click to view the full image

The first of these images comes from the upcoming Space Marine Battles book War of the Fang, a compilation of the classic (and quite frankly awesome) Battle of the Fang alongside another completely new novella-length story.

The second image is from Curse of the Phoenix Crown, the final climactic instalment in the saga of the War of Vengeance books (That's the War of the Beard if you're an elf). The conflict that will bring the world's greatest civilisations to ruin and shape the future of the Old World: ultimately leading to the rise of mankind and the Empire.

The final image comes from the the Horus Heresy audio drama Raptor. This story follows a company of the newly-founded Raven Guard Raptors as they discover a derelict ship belonging to the Space Wolves Legion. The Raptors are the mutant sons of Corax, sporting an abominable collection of claws, snouts, scales and other more exotic malformations. Judging by the cover art though, these aren't the only 'non standard' Space Marines in the story, and the Raptors might find more than they bargained for.

You can set your reminder for all of these titles today and we'll let you know by email as soon as they are available to order.
Check back regularly for more previews of upcoming titles.

That's all for today,
Thanks for reading.

.. Looking forwards immensely to the 3rd war of vengeance/the beard there -- enjoy Mr Werner's stuff a lot and it may well provide something of a fond farewell to the Warhammer World as we knew it too ...?

Audio drama certainly sounds cool enough -- artwork is not to my taste though, oddly cartoony there almost ?

I loved the SW battle book and have reread it several times and was looking forwards to this extra tale .....
... but I'm not going to rebuy the book even with this extra tale. Hope it's available on its own somewhere or when.

I've mentioned before that I still habitually buy all the HH core novels in MMPB, and I simply pre-order them on Amazon when they get listed.

Now, last night I got a dispatch notification for Damnation Of Pythos, I believe some 3 months early. Not inherently unusual, I've noticed the books frequently get released before their expected date, albeit not usually this far. The odd thing is, I'm still waiting for Vengeful Spirit (also on pre-order) which is supposedly due in around two weeks.

Seems very odd to release books in a series out of sequence (even if the plot events don't necessarily intersect or overlap.)

Anyone offer any insight into why this has happened?

.. huh, that is odd.

i too purchase the "legacy Format" editions and am waiting to pick up Vengeful Spirit in said format.

.. Only thing I can suggest is that's it's maybe an error shipping wise or perhaps due to the forthcoming HH Weekender in some way ?

I'm wondering, and it is some time ago so I might be wrong, but I think I originally ordered VS and DoP on the same pre-order, but subsequently cancelled VS and ordered it by itself (due to the shipping changes Amazon implemented) leaving the order open with just DoP on it.

I wonder if it somehow glitched and I'm actually getting VS but Amazon think I'm getting DoP?

Should arrive tomorrow, so will know for definite then.

" a compilation of the classic (and quite frankly awesome) Battle of the Fang alongside another completely new novella-length story"

I'm not sure what's the most annoying, another bloody novella or the fact that you can only get it by buying it with a book you've already got?

Are BL going out of their way to piss people off?

"Bloody typical, they've gone back to metric without telling us."

I guess that is the BL dead tree version of GW's stripping content out of a codex to sell back as DLC. Which one is battle of the fang? Is that when the thousand sons attack in 32K?

Well, mystery solved, I received the trade paperback version of Damnation of Pythos today.

Amazon were excellent though, when I contacted them to return it I received a refund and was told to keep it!

Little bit concerned about the future of the MMPB format going forward though, as while it is a selectable pre-order for VS still, it doesn't appear to be for DoP (yet, at least)
