Quite honestly, I've had bad days and good days there.

I'd recommend going again some time, you may not have the same experience.

Depends on the day.

Different day, different crowd.

They don't play what I play at the store - and the interest when I have tried to interest them is lacklustre at best. So I play elsewhere out of preference.

Although most of the aussie games clubs AREN'T set up as a store model, anyway. That's a more recent thing and still sort of rare outside of the GW store scene.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

It all depends on the people. Most days are great, but it is foolish to say they are all perfect days and everyone is great. Unfortunately, in my case, these bad cases have pretty much poisoned Warmachine/Hordes for me for the foreseeable future.

Hardly. I stopped going to my local GW because they treat me like crap. Can't get a game when I show up with all my models. Can't chat up a lady while in the store. Whatever.

my local is a GW and never had a bad day there. Chilled out and relaxed place. But then again we locals take no gak from plebs so they tend to frequent other establishments

Yes. While it's not my local game store, it's the closet for me. And they are great. If they don't have it, they will try and get it. The people are nice and very helpful.

No. The game store ten minutes away is horrible, and the 40k club is run by one of the biggest TFGs imaginable. The tournaments are rigged, the store owner is borderline hostile, and the location is terrible.

I drive an hour away for my weekly games, that's how bad it is. The store in the next town over is much nicer. The owner uses his GW support budget to give our club all the terrain we could ask for, he's supportive, and the people who run it are much more friendly. Totally worth the travel time.

My local store (about 15-20 minutes of walking from my apartment) is very friendly, and I have yet to meet any donkey-caves playing games there. They may exist, but I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of meeting them.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):

Japan

My local store is in Osaka, it is tiny, i just go to pick up my stuff. The shop host a meeting for playing at a community center nearby. The nice thing about the owner is that he is like most Japanese stores willing to help the customers, i think i am the only customer who asks to order from not mainstream companies.

I used to have a loud, obnoxious, control freak running the model wargaming scene in my local FLGS (he wasn't actually part of the store, just brought his club into it). He liked to refer to it as 'his' club and remind people of that. He was fairly hostile towards games he himself didn't play and very much encouraged the competitive style of play (which I really wouldn't have minded if it were with games that worked competitively but he considered non-GW heresy).
He also had this habit of aiming far too big, setting up prize support for a 40 man tourney then begging people to pay ASAP because he was out of pocket and later being bitter about losing money because only 25 people showed up (just like the time before and the time before that, none of us could figure out why he made spots for 40).

In the end he decided to take his ball and go home when something happened at the store. I was no longer going to the club so I can't say for sure but the store's story was he was a control freak that they didn't really want there anyway, his story was they wanted to tell him how to run his tourneys even when he ran them outside of their store, and the remaining Magic crowd's side of the story was he was pissed that his group weren't given priority over Magic and allowed to annex some of their tables.

So he went and started his own 'store' with blackjack and hookers, except I believe it is in an out of the way office space in a warehouse district and only open 5pm-10pm wed-sat. It has a bunch of tables but last time I was at my local GW (were the entire 40k scene now seems to be) he was actually calling the store, apparently paranoid, thinking all 'his' gamers were buying up another space and more tables to set up the club again without him.

The whole thing amuses me greatly.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

My FLGS is great. The owner is friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. We have up to eight tables to game on and more than enough terrain. If they don't have what you wan't they get it without any extra charge and even give a birthday bonus of 25% off everything. When new people want to try the game out the store has not one but two armies you can just pull out and play with. If you want to paint your figs they have a full paint station ready to go and if you don't know how they are more than willing to show you. Honestly Carbondale is a great place to play games.

4 local independents that I go to, some more than others, but all of them at least once a month on average (a couple, weekly).

I would say that on a scale of 1-10 of "nice", meaning good customer service, friendliness, and willingness to go the extra mile, they would all rate 8-10.

That's including the GW store.

However, on the issue of knowledgeability... much less so.

Now, if you mean, are the CUSTOMERS there nice... the short answer is "sure". But the longer, more complete answer is that a lot of the customers are looking for something totally different than me, out of the hobby, so I wouldn't really want to game with them -- though not because they're not nice people (rather, I have limited time, and I want to spend it with people that are like-minded). And most people seem pretty nice at first glance (especially if you're a glass half full kinda guy); and they don't seem not-nice until you get to know them better

we have 2 local stores now. Both carry GW stuff and misc gaming stuff. One has tables and terrain but it is hit and miss to find people to play and days they do play I am working. The other store has tables but not gaming tables so you have to push two tables together and have your own mat to put over the tables. You then have to bring your own terrain in addition. They are supposed to make tables and what not but last i was there they had not... they mostly geared for RPG/Magic playing... but want to have wargamers play there...

I seem to play my games with people i get to know and at either my house or other people i know houses and nice tables/terrain. Games can be played at anytime, food/drink no issue, and can sit and watch movie take breaks walk away and leave games in play etc.

It is! The owner or his family always say hi and ask how I've been, just really great people and the friendly environment they foster is... it's like a breath of fresh air. The crowd is pretty good as well and even when I was just stopping by to grab so supplies and watch some folks play I've just been invited to join by people starting new ones.

I'll really miss it when I move again next year :(

Well, the store is quite good.
For playing there are 6 tables available. For tourneys there are up to 10.
The owner charges 5 Euro for game play during the week days and 5 Euro separately for game play at Saturday.

Here the shops are just shops, so you don't really deal with the gamers, just the staff. If you want a game you either go to Games Workshop (hah, lemme try and play Frostgrave there) or a club. So the shop itself seems like just a regular shop, bar that the staff act a bit more casual than elsewhere. Of course how things are can vary from staff member to staff member, though overall I wouldn't call the place bad. I get a 10% discount, even if recently they're catering to a different playerbase than myself so that if I want anything it needs to be ordered in (and as flippant a buyer as I am that's problematic ...which returns to the subject of them not selling the stuff I want a bit).

The local GW has been closed the last few times I've had the impulse to pop by. Of the other two stores one went bust and the other I can't be bothered going out to. I just order online or get stuff at trade shows.

I've only been to my FLGS twice now. Both times the staff was friendly and the players were of the more laid back style gamers. Had a good game last night. I only have time to play every other week between work travel and other obligations, but it looks like I found a place to play.

Both the stores in the Pittsburgh area are great. Occasionally you meet someone who is a little sour towards someone but I can always get a game with orks.

Militarum Tempestus about 2000 points just built

I have 3 local places within a 15 minutes drive, they are all nice and for the most part everyone is friendly.

The one attached to the local comic shop I go to is really hit or miss as far as the people working there goes. I stood in line for 20 minutes while the guy behind the counter talked to someone about how great his MtG deck was and how he bought all the stuff for cheaper online, the guy he was talking to had already purchased stuff and was just hanging out talking, after being ignored for that long I finally just left and Ive not bought anything from them, thought I absolutely love the comic side.
