I... actually don't know. Help?

Just read this on BOLS:

As per the title - how many points is your ideal army?

Not your 'ideal points level', not 'what's your best X000 list'. More of a 'if money, time and FoC were no constraint on you' type affair. What is your concept of a perfectly represented army for your chosen force, and how many points does it work out?
I hope I've explained, but I suspect I've not been clear enough.
Here's a sort of sample. Let's say you play Tyranids. How many points would it take to field your fluff ideal swarm, and what would comprise it? That sort of thing.
To put some kind of break on it, because let's face it the points value of the background accurate Nids and IG would be something like 'fifteen squillion points', your force must be able to comfortably deploy onto a 8'x4' board.

Ready? GO!

What do you guys think? I myself would say about 7K points for Space Wolves, which would give me enough space for a fluffy army with tons of Puppies, maybe 9K for Space Marines, which would be nice to build 1-4 companies.

To Valhall! ~2800 points

Last time I actually crunched the numbers, I could field a full battle company in a way that actually seemed appropriate (not just spamming MSU for the free transports) for about 3k points. Toss in some space for some chapter level support, and a little help from the 1st and 10th, and I think a 4.5-5k points would make for a very nice marine army.

3000pts lets me take ALMOST anything I want no matter how big I make my fluffy choices. As long as I'm not facing Superheavies or Gargantuans, I'd love to play more games at 3k. Especially with Chaos or Tyranids. Lets me bring the 2k list of elite units and then 1k of small swarms of crap. Cultists, Gaunts and Genestealers.

Might actually throw in some offers at my gaming club for that. 2k lists with 1k additional 'basic' troop choices. UNLEASH THE TARPITS!

Well, my dream would be to field a full Titan Legion with Skitarii. So probably on the order of 100k points.

Would be a Warlord Titan, 2 Reavers, 4 Warhounds, 8 Imperial Knights, and then a bunch of Skitarii.

As a nid player, I would say that 100k points would let me properly represent a small section of the swarm.

But in reality, I think 10k would be solid. It allows me to run a couple hundred little bugs and still give full support from a lot of MCs, synapse, and fliers. Plus it leaves room for a biotitan and maybe a harridan. That's at least my goal for my swarm.

My ideal army (the Blitzakrieg) would be about 2250 points. Blitz Brigade with 3 dakkajets loaded with Flash Gitz, Tankbustas, Boyz, and Nobz. At 2000 points is really difficult to fit everything into this list and the extra 250 points would allow me to flesh everything out with the needed wargear and extras. Make it 2500 if I could throw in a Painboy and Weirdboy into every unit. You could scale this up to whatever size.

I've played a few 5,000 point games and I have found them very enjoyable. Big enough to fit in everything I want to have, without becoming too big.

(You have to remember that I played CSM and now play Pride of the Legion. Even a 5,000 point army of mine will be small in the end.)

2000, I've always liked 2k with single force org when that was a thing. It gives you room to play around with stuff or new units without crippling the rest of the force. More than that just takes too long for my speed, and I hate apoc. I've tried it a few times and I just get so bored with it.

Okies, so I got it all figured out at last. It's just shy of 7,000 points to include pretty much the entirety of me and my friend's combined custom forces.

Starting with the big stuff, and not bothering with the minutiae of individual equipment:

1 Baneblade
1 Warhound Titan

Next, my friend's renegade Space Marine forces:

Salamanders Chapter Tactics (to represent their love of tinkering and making high-quality equipment)

1 Chapter Master (his RP character)
1 squad of 3 Honor Guard, Razorback transport
2 Priestesses (my two RP characters, included here because they'll be stuck in with the Honor Guard and Chapter Master in one unit)

1 Captain
1 Command Squad, Razorback transport

2 Techmarines
2 Dreadnoughts
1 squad of 6 Sternguard Veterans, Razorback transport
1 squad of 6 Vanguard Veterans, Razorback transport
2 squads of 10 Tactical Marines, Rhino transports
2 squads of 8 Bikers, 1 Attack Bike per squad
2 Predator tanks
1 Vindicator tank
1 squad of 5 Grey Knight Interceptors (representing his Marines' most powerful psykers)

And now, my own Sisters of Battle forces:

1 Canoness (the SoB's leader)
1 Sororitas Command Squad, Immolator transport

1 not-Celestine

3 squads of 10 Battle Sisters, Rhino transports
1 squad of 10 Seraphim (the not-Celestine's bodyguard)
1 squad of 5 Retributors, Immolator transport
2 Exorcists

And that's it. Everything's got plenty of upgrades. Vehicles almost universally have dozer blades and hunter-killer missiles, with the Sororitas tanks also having Laud Hailers. Pretty much everyone who can take a power weapon has one, usually a sword, but the priestesses have axes and some of the Marines have relic blades or thunder hammers. Storm shields are pretty common among the more elite Space Marine melee units. The Space Marines have a total of 0 plasma weapons, due to their aversion to weapons that so frequently injure the users. Every Immolator has a multi-melta, and every Razorback has a twin-linked assault cannon. There are no Simulacrum Imperialises.

Also, I would never field this army, because 7,000 points is WAY too much for me to enjoy a tabletop 40k game with. I also lack the models for many of the Superiors and Sergeants.

Absolutely untenable, but would be awesome just to have a singular CAD Company Size Force.

And about 5K of Preheresy Dark Angels, to game Apocalypse with. Far more reasonable, and likely.
