Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to the 2nd game in our latest campaign. We are now 12 games into it and I’ve only posted one report, so I will endeavour to pull finger and get these up on a more regular basis.

The previous game can be found here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Gordy2000%27s_Battle_Reports

This battle is a smaller engagement (the big ones are coming soon) following directly on from the opening battle. Col. Phineas is withdrawing with his retinue and surviving squads of Antipodean Rangers recruits, hotly pursued by a howling horde of cultists.
The armouries have not yet been reached for issue of special or heavy weapons.

Loyalist OB: Phineas Retinue, two Antipodean Ranger recruit squads (10 men, lasguns & grenades only). Three squads of Arbites (8-10 men, two squads with bolters, one with shotguns), Arbites Judge with command squad, two Repressors.
Insurgent OB: six squads of cultists (autoguns only, or autopistols and hand weapons only), four squads of renegade militia (lasguns and grenades only). Any cultist squad completely destroyed comes on again next turn as a reinforcement.

Deployment: (6x4, played end to end) Phineas and the two Ranger squads set up not more than 24” from the Insurgent table end. Two squads of cultists start in the Loyalist table half, one each side of the main boulevard. Two squads of Cultists arrive in front of Phineas on the first turn. The remaining Insurgents turn up as reinforcements 3 squads a turn (one squad each from their base line and the two sides). The Arbites arrive turn 2. Insurgents have the first turn.

Objectives: Loyalist objective is to get Phineas away safely and without pursuit, so he can rally the Loyalist forces; Insurgent aim is to prevent this.

Phineas ran like he hadn’t for decades. Life at the top of the pile in the hierarchy of Triskelion had sharpened his wit and political skills to a razor edge, but his physical prowess was now woefully lacking. His retinue jogged along with him, and like the accompanying Ranger recruits, seemed barely troubled by their exertions.

“My lord, I have raised the local Arbites precinct. A relief force is already en route”. Phineas could have hugged his attendant for the news, but kept what he hoped was a stern but confident visage.

“Good work – lets pick up the pace so those damned rioters don’t get to us first”

As if to punctuate his point, auto gun fire began to snap over their heads as the first of their pursuers appeared in the street behind them.

No time to waste!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“Steady men, they’re close now. Jenkins, did you get that call through?

“There’s more behind us sir!”

The table during the first Insurgent movement phase

Nope, doesn’t look any better from this way

An ambush is prepared

“At them! No prisoners!”

Loyalist second turn – Cultist autoguns have cut down most of the Ranger recruits

Timely arrival – it’s going to be close.

“Forwards!”

The chase is on

Can the ambushing squads hold Phineas up long enough?

“Get them, men”

A nice piece of driving – cover, anyone? Phineas ducks into one of the Repressors, which backs away

The Arbites begin to work their way through the opposing cultists

The ambushers take a pounding

Turn 4: “Faster you fools, they’re getting away!!”

It was clear Phineas had got away, and there would be no continued close pursuit.

Covering fire is given as the rescue force evacuates Phineas and his retinue

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Phineas lent against the cool internal wall of the Repressor APC as it roared through the deserted streets back towards the Arbites Precinct. This was getting out of hand – he had seen well equipped rebel militia behind those rioters. An unwelcome and disturbing development indeed. He turned to his attendant.

“Signal all available forces. All strategic sites and armouries are to be secured –martial law is declared forthwith”

Phineas paused, unwilling to give voice to the terrible possibility now forming in his mind

“This is more than an isolated series of riots and civil unrest. This may well be the start of a full scale revolt…”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Phineas’ Retinue gains another man – Arbites liaison.

Next game – the race for the armouries. Huge hordes of rebels clash with PDF, Guard and Arbites as the conflict escalates.

I'm curious, what army rules were you using for those arbites? I love how they look.
