I sculpted this road section using polymer clay, and would like some feedback on how I did. This is six inches of a foot long section of road I'm making. The width is five inches, I feel pretty comfortable with this size for a civilian road. I made a crater that blew a car off the road to make things more interesting. The car was sculpted and baked separately. When I cast these, the car will be made separate from the road, and the resin copy glued to the road. I did this so I could maybe use the car in other projects. I got the idea for the car from old communist style vehicles. I've always thought of cars in the Warhammer Universe looking that way, and I like it better than the 30's-40's style cars most people are using. I'm low on clay, so I'm doing the road in two 6in sections. I'll use super glue to connect them. I wanna do a few more section with other wrecked/destroyed vehicles, and more craters! When They're all done I'll go back and add some dirt, and kitty litter to simulate rubble. Once that's done, I'll hit it with a couple coats of primer. Got a long way to go..

I should've mentioned that I wanted to use hover cars. It is the future, so I was hoping I could get away with it. I was thinking something like a Star Wars Landspeeder that only hovers maybe a foot off the ground. It's not Bruce Willis's taxi from The Fifth Element, so it could still use roads. Its not the only wrecked vehicle I'm going to use, but one I wanted to try out. Is this a stupid idea? I'm always open to criticism, if an idea sucks I want somebody to tell me! Haha.

No its sounds like a "steam Punk esk" idea? maybe" I'm not sure. But old school car, hovering in the future sounds cool!

I would definitely add more detail to the crater though. Rough it up some. I am not sure how hard that is to do. I guess the outsides of the crater needs to be broken up so from the surrounding area.

I think you need to make your rocks then cure them and glue them on. Right now they look like they melted into the curves of the crater.

I think I'm going to add tank tracks to the car. I originally wanted to do this anyway so the car would be able to handle rough terrain where there weren't any roads. The more I look at the hover car, the more it just looks like an unfinished wheel-less car. I still have to add dirt for the rubble, this will give the crater more detail. I got alot of inspiration from Forge Worlds awesome looking road sets.

That is a good idea. I'll glue some more rocks on, thank god for super glue!

If it's any consolation, I thought it was a hover car.

I like the style, it reminds me of the old genestealer cult armored limo.

I agree with more cracks/rubble for the crater itself.

Have you ever tried oil based clay? It never dries, and you don't bake it or anything. This way you can sculpt, make a mold and reuse the clay for another project. I use monster clay for special effects work and it's great being able to recycle the material.

Thank you! I love the look of hover cars, but I don't think it's right for Warhammer 40K. I think most people wanna see land based vehicles. I started sculpting with polymer, so I've always stuck with that. That's a great idea though. Where do you get your oil based clay? Monster clay is a brand? I wouldn't be able to add sand for the rubble effect to oil based clay though. Don't wanna roll a thousand beads of clay for different sized rubble. Sand and kitty litter work really well with a little bit of glue on cured polymer.

True, the downside is you couldn't bake anything into the clay for texture.

Monster Clay is a brand yes, can get it from http://www.monstermakers.com/ or from Amazon. 5 lbs is about $30
It is slower to work with, as you have to heat it. At room temperature it is hard and more for carving. Heat it up it becomes more malleable, and you can even melt it into a liquid and pour it.

I think I might try that clay on other sculptures I make. I normally sculpt some kind of monster. Made these around jars to save clay. I throw a bunch of little crap in them.
