"Paint my own company pauldrons" I thought "it'll be fun" I thought.

Very time consuming and a few turned out a bit meh.

You're being far too critical of yourself, transfers wouldn't have come out anywhere near that good.

Were I not a sufferer of harsh self criticism of painting myself, I'd accuse you of being the pretty girl posting pictures of yourself on facebook looking amazing and writing something like "feel so ugly today " just so you can get compliments

Seriously though dude, they're great.

Thanks man, I appreciate the comment. I think the ones at the front are good but tbh I put the worst couple at the back. My main gripe is notso much how they've turned out but how long it's going to take me to do armys worth.

Oh man that must have been a pain! I'm not a fan of transfers, one thing good about them though is they are time saving and they are uniform (whether that means they look good is personal preference).

I also have never used them with microset and sol.. that I heard makes a big difference.

You could paint some out on paper, scan them in and then get fallouthobbies to duplicate them as transfers?

But yes, painting tons of those over and over again would be slightly draining - still, if you can muster it, the end result would be quite impressive!

The shoulder markings look great, man! And much more unique than transfers

First... WOW! Those look AWESOME!

Second... doing that on a decal would be almost as big a pain as painting them. You're trying to put a 2-D image on a 3-D complex curve. It's going to be messy.

It's so messy that I'm hand-painting Black Legion shoulder flashes on the commission I'm working on rather than use the decals that came with the minis. I've found it to be easier.

Last... printing water-slide transfers with inkjet printers isn't going to work. You see, inkjet ink is water soluble...

You need a laser printer to make it work.

Thanks Talys. I really like the design it's the company sigil of Gunnar Redmoon. So many people go with the ragnar pads, I wanted to be a bit different.

Such a thing exists?

My wife worked in a copy place, and they had waterslide stock, but it was clearly labeled 'for laser printer/photocopier use only'. Fine print explained why.

I really do think they look great. I've just started up a small Raven Guard army, and I was going to freehand my icons like you have here, but I think I'll go with transfers just for the sake of consistency. Your freehanding is absolutely great, though. I don't think I'll be anywhere near that good any time soon. As for the amount of time it takes, just don't rush yourself. I'd suggest just getting everything done on all of your marines except for the icons first. Then, you can just go through a little at a time and do a marine or two every time you get a chance.

Looks sweet man but i dont want to be you trying to paint up a demi company or 2

Very nice. I considered painting my own Space Wolf shoulder pads but stopped for the same reason you did, time, it was taking me ages to paint each one. Also the curved surface, I could get really nice designs on a flat sheet which I was struggling to get on to the curved shoulder pad.

Another option which I've considered but never followed through with was sculpting my own design with greenstuff and then casting a whole bunch of them. It might sound more time consuming, but it'll make the painting process a lot faster, lol.

I wish I could sculpt then that would be a real option. I may just do everything and leave them till last like previously commented

Those look great!

Put a little glaze or wash on them to break the stark appearance and your all set!

They look great! From someone who has painted chapter symbols on almost 350 marines and vehicles I say it is worth it to do so! It gives them a unique look and you don't have the problems that go with transfers!
Keep doing it mate, it will be worth it!

Awesome job mate. I love them much more then transfers, they have an artifice quality that only hand made things can achieve.

Womprat-what glaze would you suggest? Slipstream - hot damn that's a lot of marines. Fortunately SW company's are relatively small so once I reach 100 I'll probably do a different chapter. And thanks red appreciate the comments I was there thinking most people would prioritise absolute uniformity over the the effort it takes to do something by hand.
