This Is Where the Fish Lives

This is the first model kit I've done this year and it helped me get over a painting/modeling rut I went through in December.. This is a 1/12 scale kit from Bandai and like all of their kits, it comes in colored plastic. However, I prefer to paint everything so that's what I did with this model. The white is a custom off-white mix of various Tamiya acrylics, the orange is a custom mix of Vallejo Model Air, and the metallic parts were done with Alclad II lacquers (they're really reflective so they're a little washed out in the photo). The model was weathered slightly with Mig Productions 502 Abteilung oils. Some of the hatches on his body are removable to allow you to add the gadgets seen in The Force Awakens.

At 1/12 scale, BB-8 stands about 3 1/4" tall, including his antenna. Thanks for looking, comments and criticism are always welcome!

he looks great!!!
orange is probably my least favorite color, but you made it look really nice...

the only thing i think he is lacking would be some gloss varnish on the two lenses, for some natural reflective action...

i love your work on the Star Wars kits!!!
keep it up...

cheers

Thanks!

I feel you on the orange... I'm don't like the color either and I certainly don't like painting it. His lens are pretty shiny straight from the sprue and I think it's a little more noticeable in person than it is in the picture, but a dip in some Future might do them some good so I'll probably give it a go (also, I think there is a thumbprint on the large one from when I pushed it into place ).

An adorable kit, and an A+ paint job to go with it.

Absolutely love it! The longer I look, the cooler it gets.

Mind if I ask what your starring point for the orange was? I have the cheap RC version and was looking to airbrush and weather it properly, as it cvones in a very sterile white.

Of course! I can give you a run down of all of the colors used (all of which were over a light grey primer):

Orange: Vallejo Model Air Orange (71083), VMA White (71001) and VMA Yellow mixed 4:4:1 with just a touch of VMA Hull Red (71039) added to it (I put a little bit on my palette and dipped a small brush in and mixed into the orange/white/yellow mix)
White: Preshaded with Tamiya German Grey (XF-63) and then painted with Tamiya Flat White (XF-2) and Buff (XF-57) mixed at a 12:1 ratio with a touch of Neutral Grey (XF-53) added to it (same deal as with adding the Hull Red to the orange mix)
Metal surfaces: Alclad II Aluminum (ALC 101)
I have the cheap RC version and was looking to airbrush and weather it properly, as it cvones in a very sterile white.
After giving everything a coat of Future (gloss varnish) I used Mig Productions 502 Abteilung Starship Filth to give the entire model a 'gunk wash,' which is applying oil paint neat, working it into all of the nooks, crannies, and panel lines, and then wiping it off with a rag.

Thank you so much! I will have to look at varnishing options before anything, as a toy rolling around carpets will need to be fairly tough if I repaint it.
Do love the model air range though, especially their metallics.

Thanks everyone!

This model also came with an R2-D2 model that I am going to paint as R2-KT.
