As a Color , Orange seems to be more of a challenge , like white and yellow, to me.

But i am still thinking about using Orange as One of the primary colors for some Ad Mech.
I would like to use: a grey ( maybe "codex " or "shadow" grey in GW terms ) for the Uniform ,
Orange for Hoods / mantle, a red for armor / backpack / markings, a Black
( rather " Anthrazit" ) for Metal Parts and weapons.

So how does One get to a Nice Orange ?

Prime the surfaces in ... ?
Choose a Orange Color and Paint 1-2-3 layers until youre happy with it?
Or is it a Bit more complicated ?

Please help.
Am Not " best Friends " with some of the brighter colors
TIA

I find starting with a darker orange and using a brighter orange as a second coat covers much more nicely and adds more depth to the final colour.

I suppose it depends on the effect you are going for.
You could paint a lighter color (white), then a darker color of orange on top.
Paint a darker color (black, red), then paint up to your chosen color.
Another way to go is to paint the whole mini yellow, then wash it with a dark orange.

Here are several tutorials on YouTube that might help:

I did an entire army with orange as my primary color. Fortunately for me I had GWs foundation paint range to work with and the orange color that they had was awesome and covered extremely well.

Since that color is no longer available, I've had to just use layers. Prime white, use a darker orange to get your base coat until its all covered then highlight with layers of lighter orange using yellow, not white to lighten the same original orange.

Bad pics of my orange Emperors Children army can be found in my sig.

Tried to prime test models in white....didn't work so well..maybe the white colors I have suck.

Had to start in fortress grey, next step white , third step orange.

@Jayden63: thanks for reminding me I had some foundation paints somewhere.

Second test model in Solar macharius orange , followed by the same blazing orange as the first model.

Didn't expect them to look so similar. ( pic at bottom of post ).

Things depend on the supply chain now. Could use the foundation paint and switch to the 3 step method later.

2 x grey + 2 x orange + red + yellow + anthrazit + white + ( boltgun metal ) + washes is a nice and small range and something I may have and won't have to buy additional colors.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I prime grey, then highlight from above with white. Then wash with Vallejo fire orange. When dry I add a very thinned black wash.
