My Start Collecting Skitarii box came in today. I've done lots of research on the Dominus Maniple beforehand and everywhere I looked people said that the formation consists of:
- 1 Tech-Priest Dominus
- 1 unit of Skitarii Vanguard
- 1 Onager Dunecrawler
Example sources include:
- https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Skitarii_(7E) - "Dominus Maniple - 1 unit of Vanguard (and Vanguard only, so no Rangers here), 1 unit of Dunecrawlers, 1 Tech-Priest Dominus. Pick a unit within 18" of the Dominus and within his LoS at the start of the shooting phase, all units from this formation gain twin-linked against that unit for that phase."
- http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/317950-dominus-maniple/ - "You can't take Rangers in the Dominus Maniple, only Vanguard."

I open my box and find this http://imgur.com/ANopnTu
It clearly says:
- 1 Tech-Priest Dominus
- 1 unit of Skitarii Rangers
- 1 Onager Dunecrawler

WTF? Is this a print error or what?

That is strange, cuz on the website they even advertise that you're suppose to build them up as Vanguards, with Rangers as an alternative option not the main one, so it even implies that it should be vanguards.

If no one else with the sheet comes up, maybe email GW customer service about it?

EDIT: The picture on the website though are Rangers. Maybe someone in the web department didn't get the memo?

I would say that the actual Formation sheet trumps random, non-GW comments on the internet. This wouldn't be the first time that the internet got something wrong.

GW goofed. To use the Formation you have to build them as Vanguard. That said Vanguard are arguably the better option but it's silly to include a dual kit and not allow for either to be used.

My box arrived today and also says rangers for the formation. Maybe its luck of the draw which you get

Someone was building this at my LGS recently. The box shows Rangers all over it.

The document inside that carries the rules of the Formation specifically states Vanguard, though.

The Special Rules don't refer to either unit, so if your buddies are cool with it, go ahead with the Rangers, but just be aware that some may not be and not play you either then or again.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

...and mine says Vanguard. I wonder if this is a GW completionist ploy: "If we put one sheet own Box A for Vanguard, and one sheet in otherwise identical Box B for Rangers, they'll buy multiples to ensure they get both sheets!"

Email GW and tell them your sheet seems to have a printing error.

Maybe you get lucky and they send you a second box. :3 I got a second settra once when all was missing was his goatee.

If your formation datasheet says Rangers then you're free to use Rangers.

At least until GW publishes an errata clarifying which one is the correct one. That might take a while though - are you familiar with the timeframe "soon(tm)" from Blizzard?

My datasheet says vanguard, I thought it was very strange the box is plastered with rangers, and only rangers, but the datasheet calls for vanguard.

I prefer the vanguard with plasma, especially with the formation rerolls anyway.

This is hilarious. Y'all post images of your formation sheets; maybe we can spot other differences.

Just had a reply to my emails after linking these forums and the different cards. Still don't fully understand what they are saying is official because they then sent me another GW PDF card saying rangers on it.

Here is the message.

"Thank you for your email and our product team have been working on this to give you an appropriate answer.

Although you could assemble them as Rangers and still use the rules (it would be a cold opponent but who said you couldn't!), we are amending this formation in all future reprints and here is the formation sheet with the Ranger information.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Severine

SO they meant for it to be rangers? Because the pictures on the box would make it seam that way...but all the hype up to the release said vanguard...either way I received the vanguard formation and am happy with it.

Quick, someone do the same email to them and tell them that you got Vanguard instead of Rangers!

I dont understand?

They know they sent both vanguard and ranger formations out...

The models can be assembled as either so its not a big deal.

Not that complicated of an idea. There are just two different (but similar) printed formations. They're both valid GW publications, so they're both legal.

Let me get this straight....so instead of just putting "1squad of Vanguard or Rangers" they printed up 2 different sheets?

It sounds like they intended for the sheets to all be one kind, but accidentally printed and sent out some of the other. I would imagine that whoever does the actual layouts had made both a Ranger version and a Vanguard version before the decision was made and sent the wrong version out at some point in the process.

People who claim that "it's not a bid deal because you can assemble the models as either vanguard or rangers" don't really understand the issue. What you can assemble them as is irrelevant.

If I decide to assemble them as Vanguard I want to be able to use them in the Dominus Maniple formation which won't be possible if the Vanguard sheet contains an error. Do you get it now? Yes, we can assemble them as both Vanguard and Rangers but it's risky to assemble them as either not knowing which unit is a part of the formation.

Btw. I don't understand the response email from GW. They couldn't have made it more convoluted....

Their email is pretty straightforward. GW doesn't care about competitive play. If you have the Formation sheet in hand, it's valid for play whether it says Rangers or Vanguard. Just make sure you include the appropriate unit. The implication is that anyone who wouldn't allow it is a jerk.

If your sheet says vanguard....its valid assemble them as vanguard.....if your sheet says rangers....guess what....those vanguard can be assembled as rangers....It is a non issue....assemble them as your sheet says....

My only advice stay away from the big sniper rifles...they always disappoint.

The 18" effect would seem to suggest Vanguard, maybe.

Since when following the rules = competitive play? I'm not trying to come up with the cheesiest Skitarii list possible. I just want to know how to play the game properly.

That's kind of my point. GW's stance seems to be that if you're buying models and having fun, you're playing the game properly. If that means using Rangers with a Rangers printed sheet, go for it. If that means using Vanguard with a Vanguard printed sheet, go for it. They're not likely to tell us that one version isn't usable. They're more likely to just print the 'correct' version going forward and happily let people use the 'incorrect' version if they happened to get a copy.

I'm just about to make up a box if these. The consensus here seems to be just stick to the formation on the sheet in your box. Mine being vanguards. Is there any updated info from GW as to the 'correct version' though?

Seems like a good formation either way actually. And useful for making a war convocation later on. I think this with the Space a Wolves stater box would be cool together. Wonder if I could fit in an AstraM box in 1850 too?!
