Subject: First ever painted miniature. Pls be gentle
Here are a few of my Necron Warriors I painted today. This is my first time painting models of any kind so as my title says pls be gentle with me. When I looked at the photos I noticed quite a few flaws which I hadn't previously but I'm sure with time I will improve. I certainly enjoyed it and would def appreciate any advice
Had trouble posting pics from ipad. :(

It looks good, the paint doesn't seem to be to put on to heavily and isn't bleeding outside the area each colour should be in, whilst the OSL around the eyes is a fair attempt. Least good bit would be the base which would look better painted.

He looks great! Like others said, paint the base, even a simple coat of brown or gray, and it would be perfect.

Nice, I like the pose and work on the pupils, gives him a very sinister glare, like you don't wanna be what he's looking at. I find often modelers pose their warriors looking up into the air at nothing, which looks derpy like they're lost, in my opinion.
Some things I can suggest: if you prime your warriors in black, it makes painting around the indentations in their 'ribs' a breeze, giving easy depth to their internals.
With the tube on the gun, you can help get a smoother transition between the different greens by creating a 50/50 mix of the two you've painted, watering it down pretty thin, and painting it over where the two colors meet. this helps blend them a lot.
It looks like you've done a bit of shading, but I feel you could go a bit heavier in some of the recesses, like in the arm joints, between the fingers, and between the grill vents on the gun. If you have a good shading brush and a nice thin wash, you can get the wash to run straight off the brush and 'flood' the recesses just by touching the brush to them. Takes a bit of trial and error to get just the right amount on the brush though.
Keep it up, and have fun painting

Like others have said the base is the one thing where improvements could be made. Coat it black and highlight with a dry brush of Longbeard Grey or Terminatus Stone for a quick easy solution.

Looking good! The only thing I would say is maybe paint the base a little bit, just to give it some more color.
TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

You can get away with painting the legs a little darker to the piece more depth. Also the base could be painted to contrast the basic silver black theme. Something like an alien purple or Mars landscape red clay could be interesting.
Also suggest to "weather" your Necrons, everybody paints them silver "clean" look.
Just keep painting the next 19 and your basically ready to rock!

Good solid first effort. Couple of things worth mentioning for future models though
1) Always check your model for mould lines. They will haunt you forever! This is part of the casting process and is caused by movement of the moulds. These are pretty easy to remove- just scrape them off with your hobby knife (or if you have one, the mould line remover from Games Workshop- excellent bit of kit) and file it a little with an emery board or a fine file to smooth it over. 2) Sprue connections- I can see on the gun arm where you've clipped it from the frame. Again, easy fix. Just snip further away from the component you're after, then use the hobby knife tip(so you don't gouge a lump out of it) to cut the rest off from the component. After that, clean it up with a file.

Thank you for all the feed back guys, taking notes of it all. I didn't even think to remove mould lines and the tips on shading are very appreciated. Agree completely about the base. need to get it painted up.. I like the idea of a Mars red
just seeing the model so close up made me aware of so many mistakes that I hadn't noticed and I am very critical and really want to improve
Is it worth investing in some good Paint brushes? the ones I'm using (I got a pack of 50 for £18.99 from an online hobby store) seem ok but I really want to give my self the best start tbh and if brushes are a big factor in the work that can be produced id rather learn that now and rectify it early one. The models cost a small fortune so I would rather treat them as well as I can really.
I've got to say, it is very relaxing actually and I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Again thanks everyone for the feedback it is appreciated.
I had suggested to me that I consider starting a blog and if this will allow me to get constructive criticism on the Models I paint then it definitely might be an option.
Thanks again.

As a fellow newbie, I can tell you that brushes are a HUGE factor in the learning curve. You don't have to spend a fortune on them, but good ones make the job so much more pleasant.
I got a bunch of different sized for $3-$5 (both synthetics and cheaper sable) each and then got 3 Kolinsky Sables for the fine detail stuff(size 0, 00 and 000). Don't throw out the cheaper ones you have either. Use them for glue, wash brushes and large areas of metallic paint use.
If you want to use a cool mars effect on your base, get the GW Martian Ironearth technical paint. Paint the base a darker red, use the paint thickly and when it dries it will leave a cracked earth appearance. Then paint over it lightly with the same red and dry brush with a lighter red. It looks super cool!

These might be useful for you as well if you've not already checked them out. The Necron Overlord one is very useful for all the various orbs and the melee weapons on the Necron models- not so much on the warriors as they're an older kit.

A great start and a million times better than my first model.
While we're on the subject of equipment and tips, get hold of some acrylic medium/flow enhancer and use it to thin down the paint you use for your highlights and then build the highlights up using several layers of the same mix, but reapplying the mix over a smaller area each time - it makes so much difference!

This is one of my first models, from back in the early 90s when I was about 11 or 12. So I'd echo Lucifer's comment - a million times better than my first model!

Get some cheap second hand models off eBay to practice with. I've just started a new Space Marines homebrew chapter, so I wanted to try out both some colour schemes and some new techniques. I used some old 2nd ed models I had kicking around. Then once happy, started painting my actual models I care about. You don't even have to get Crons. Get some marines if cheaper and just try out different things with them. Treat them as disposable. You can always strip them and start again if you want to try anything else.

Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts
Amazing paint job for a first timer.
I wish half the people I knew would pay as much attention to detail and take their time with it as you have.
I cant wait to see the rest of your army
In terms of what you said about the hobby costing a small fortune, check out the store I work for there up to 25% off GW retail prices on everything. Here is the link:

Very nice work. A squad of ten painted to that standard will look great. Lots of really great advice has already been given here and I trust you're in good hands here. They're steering ya right.
I feel starting a little project log here on Dakka is a great idea. Just hop on down to the dakka P&M blogs forums and start a thread. You can post your works in progress, ask for advice/critiques, show off your work and have a visual history of the work you've done to date. It's a great way to stay motivated and have some input on your work, it's helped me tremendously to have the fine folks of Dakka critique my work as I go and help me get the best I can out of my painting.
Best of luck on your future projects and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

This looks pretty good! I think the next step you need to do is paint the basing. I'd put the basing on first when you assemble the mini, and prime it black along with the mini. Drybrush the basing in 2-3 progressively lighter greys and you'll be golden.
