So im looking at building a multipurpose gaming table out in wolves den, my gaming garage.

the room itself is 20x20 but shelving and storage for armies takes up about 5' of the sides.

I am thinking of this for the gaming table.

Its made up of two sections each six feet by six feet. consisting of 9 2'x2' tiles or in the case of Apocalypse games 3 of the fat mat thingys.

This will give me two 6'x6' fields to use for 2-4 player 1850 point armies, or one 12'x6' Apocalypse table.

For Warhammer 40k we have a small group of about a dozen guys/gals in the neighborhood that play, varies how many come
For Pathfinder i have just six players at my table.
For 5e DND i play with 7 other guys.
For Starwars there is going to be 10 players
For d20 Modern there is 6 players
For 2e AD&D there is 5 players.

So for the various other games that take place in the room needs to be plenty of space for the table.

My concern is that the 6x6 or 12x6 may not be of a large enough size for 40k.. So im asking advice before i draw up some plans for it.

Not big enough for 40k? Haha, I don't understand, most games are on 6x4 tables.

In my space I have Three 6x4 tables, exact fit with no extra lip. I like tables with the extra lip, but I did it without - for Apocalypse.

That way I can push them together in any arrangement and at least my game mats or terrain will still look right.

I haven't finished all the legs yet, currently they're all on saw horses, but eventually they'll all be the same height - for Apocalypse.

Three 6x4 tables might actually be more useful. Depends on whether you are going to build all of the terrain into the tables, or simply have them as a flat base for placing terrain into from your set?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

right now ive got 2 folding 2'6" x 6' tables that we just push together.. which makes for a 5x6 table. that's an OK a size area for a single 1 vs 1 1850 battle, even 2k a side

but when you add in that there are 12 possible players in the garage here each week.. thats ALOT of figures to fit onto the current table. Thats why im looking at doubling it. ive got almost 12k points of dark angles, the others all have multiple armies of 2k points min, most having 4 or 5 armies that they own. Which means alot of space needed.

The big thing is that it needs to double as a d20 gaming table as well for 10 players + me + food/drinks. Basically making the center of the garage into a small "island" like you could find in a kitchen.

Its going to be flat with a lip on the very outside to stop dice/minis from falling. other then that i dont really wanna do 3 pieces as 18x12 wont work as half the table is bigger folks and need more room to move about and a 12x8 aint too much smaller then what i was thinking of.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
was thinking flat base. with using a whole bunch of removgable tiles to fill it, if dont want to use the fat maps. that way i can work on terrain and put some of the extra wood ive got on hand to use

One thing to consider if using the table for RPGs is comfort. For mini wargames you are going to be on your feet, moving around the table, pushing the plastic.

For role playing, while you might occasionally need to get a good look at the battlemat and push a mini around, most of your time is seated. So get comfy chairs.

It’s one thing to sometimes sit on a stool at the table while the other guy takes his turn, but for RPGs, I’d want something with a back and some padding.

If I was building a man cave for gaming, I’d have two separate sections. One for the tables for mini games, and the other a corner with some sofas and a coffee table for when the mat needs to come out.

A few questions

Exactly how many tables are you really thinking you will need at any given time?

how many people are you expecting to show up on a regular bases

do you need to park your car inside?

Ill get some pictures of the space tomarrow. Phones charging and i dont like the kindle quality as well as the s4.
In the local group we got in facebook there are 14 folks in our late 30s early 40s. On an given saturday there have been between 4-6 players with armies ranging from 1850-2000 if we use fortifications/flyers. Weve already had a 1v1 and 2v2 at 3200 points a side. That was crowded as all heck on the table. Couldnt really hit and run with the bikers as was nowhere to run too that wasnt taken up by figures.

With this project i was hoping to allow for 2-3 games to take place at the same time or one huge war to take place.

For RPG games, the space is fine, chairs are comfy enough. the regulars brought their own chairs over here. the crafting tables do work just fine.

But as this is the place im going to be DMing out of for the rest of my life... Just fine and comfy enough are not good enough.

Far as parking the car. no, this is a secondary garage that was built to house snow mobiles and be the shop of the two car guys that owned the property before i got it. This garage has a dedicated furnace, and next week will have an AC Unit. Last winter i replaced the insulation and had a guy hang the sheet rock and teach me how to do it. Then i painted it, and built a sturdy set of shelves on side of the room and stuck a couple folding tables from the local store in the center and had the gamers all bring the chair they want to sit their butts in for a few hours a few times a week. I was thinking about a way to raise or lower the table to adjust for if we are standing or sitting. I have a dedicated power box in here and have a few of the larger sized outlets. Ill show in the photos on the marrow.

I built my gaming table as a 4'x6' with with a lip and a 5" wide tray all on the 2 long sides. Works well for most gaming. I also build adjustable height legs into mine so that it can lower down to a regular table height, and nerd table height, and a table height of tall so that my kid could wander under it and tall bar chairs work with it since that's what I have besides folding chairs.
You could build 2 6'x4' tables with a lip that folds out or up that hides underneath with a clamp or clasp and fold it out with a hinge.

Im going to assume you dont what to just do plywood and folding tables.

you probably could fit in 3 6x4 wood tables kinda like these
and put them together to make a 6x12 for apoc games if you really need it.

casters optional if you have some stronger members to move them around.

I would not bother to build tables.

Here is why.

Get gaming mats and scatter terraain, and just put them on those folding tables you have. Two of the tables together is a 6'x5 - perfect for a single 40k game, or RPG.

put four or five tables together in various ways, and you have bigger apoc games or whatever you want. You can rearrange and mix and match as needed, then fold them up (racks in the ceiling are a great idea) when not needed.

I have a game room just a bit bigger than a garage, and I have about 6-8 of these tables, and they support several small games and a couple large games at the same time - sounds like something similar you are doing.

Best of luck!
