Hey there,

Some of you may have a seen a previous blog I started concerning a C:SM army , some models of which were stripped of paint, and was destined to be an Imperial Fists army.

However, I have decided to once again try for a Custom Chapter. I have tried this twice before and failed, but am still determined to have a homebrew chapter ( as it turns out when I went to start painting an Imperial Fist ) .

So , without delay, here are the specs.

Origins:
This army was originally intended to be, in order , Red Scorpions, Salamanders, Soul Drinkers, and now the custom Chapter.

What was done :
After clipping off and remodeling the mutations which I had scattered through the army upon choosing Soul Drinkers to bring them back to standard and untainted, I also rebased a few whose bases were destroyed during the process.

I managed to find some Back-To-Base-IX Resin bases ( Lava theme ) in a bargain bin at a local games store one day, which was quite amazing since the guy sells in bulk on ebay and is pretty pricey !

All models which required stripping were cleaned, which had Green Stuff Scales had them cut off and green stuff smoothed back over the surfaced as best I could, and rebased The only model requiring a base still is the Centurion Sargent, which GW is current out of stock for so am waiting on that !

How I came up with the scheme :
My idea for the custom chapter was inspired by the Storm Wardens chapter, as I was really struck by the Silver and found I didn't mind the blue either (typically not a fan of blue as a primary colour for models ) . I did however decide to take this opportunity to use two paints I bought from GW a long time ago but have never had an excuse to use, but like very much. They are Thunderhawk Blue and Dark Reaper.

Lore :
As of yet, I have not written any fleshed out details for this part . The concept I'm working with for now is just that they are basically ( Like the Storm Wardens) an unsung hero chapter of the space marines primary operating out of the limelight or on far fringes of the universe.
As such, I have not decided if they have a home world or are fleet based, or any details like that.

Name :
Presently it is very much a working title, however I came up with " Brotherhood of the Storm " which I really like.

I am really excited about this project , which is amazing since my desire to paint is lately pretty conditional based on whats happening in my mind.

I have attached a photo of the first test model I am doing, sorry for the lighting I promise when he is done ill take a better one

Thanks for reading guys, and stay tuned for more including an army list ! ( I Intend to write a 500 point list , paint it, and expand ) .

Looks nice! Really like the quartered scheme and the colors seem to work well together. Interested to see where this takes you. Keep at it!

Thanks Brushcommando !

Well here it is guys ! The first marine is COMPLETE ! (Bar basing which I am still working out ) . Admittedly it came out a little lighter than I expected, but I actually like the new lighter version.

All up I am extremely happy with this. My girlfriend is also very artistic and I told her my custom marine idea and mentioned I needed to design a chapter symbol. I mentioned I'd like to incorporate lightning bolts and she actually drew the symbol I painted on so all credit for that design goes to her !

As for the basing, originally it was intended to be a Lava/ Rock themed army ( Since the previous army it was meant to be was themed like that ) however now considering their working title of the Brotherhood Of The Storm , I am considering painting the parts that would be Lava as running Water !

This would also allow me to use grass flock and greenery, which is something I've never been able to do due to the army themes, but have always wanted to.

So here it is guys, what do you think and what is your opinion on the base idea ?

That looks really good all tidied up. And as for your basing idea, I think that would be awesome. Water bases are a real rarity and I think they would make your models stand out even more.

Thanks man Yes I thought about it and realized I hadn't seen any water bases, and even foresty/living bases were scarce so figured why not . It could always be themed that they've arrived on a world that is not completely destroyed, only at the beginning of a war or corruption.

I managed to paint up 3 more tactical marines including the sgt for the squad. I took what I learnt from painting the first one and have refined the process a little more, but am still always improving

The Logitech C920 Webcam I purchased last year which ive been using to take the pics so far is STILL being a spanner in terms of lighting levels and auto focus (ive been manually focusing every single picture as it comes out better than if I leave auto focus on) , and so I've switched to taking photos with my Phone ( since my Samsung's camera is a better camera than my dedicated camera !).

I intend to paint the bases up once the squad is finished What do you guys think ?

Coming together quite nicely. Can't wait to see the scheme on something bigger, like the centurion or the dreads. Have you figured out any more of their backstory yet?

Thanks man Me too actually...I've been considering trying either a Dreadnought or a Whirlwind after this squad is completed. I wrote up a quick 500pt list to keep me motivated, which would use the same models and expand to 1000 ( A strategy im trialling for getting an army painted in full ) .

HQ
Librarian
- ML 1, Terminator Armour, Storm Bolter, Power Sword

Elites
Dreadnought
- Multi melta , PF with Storm Bolter

Troops
5 x Scouts
- Camo Cloaks, Sniper Rifles
10 x Tactical Marines
- Missile Launcher, Plasma Gun

Heavy Support
Whirlwind

With this in mind, ive been trying to keep things centered around this list. The main reason for the Terminator librarian is because I love running terminators, and especially as transports for my Captain / Librarians, so its thinking ahead

However im always happy for feedback on this list as it is certainly subject to change

Thanks man !

These are the same marines from my Soul Drinkers post I did back when

Basing wise I was going to stick with Lava / rock theme, but figured id try something completely left field. Im going to paint the rocks as usual, but what would usually be lava will now be running water. I will then add some grass and greenery to the regular non water bases in order to give the appearance of a world that may be under siege but is not yet destroyed or tainted.

I figured why not since ive always wanted but never had an excuse to do a green living themed base army

Hey guys !

This post right here is pretty much just an opinion poll, and does not necessarily reflect any solid outcome for this project. It's more me just thinking out loud, and wondering hey lets see what other people think.

The basic idea that crossed my mind was to switch from using the C:SM for this army to using the BA codex. I've comprised a small list of pros and Cons i've come up with so far.

C:SM
Pros:
- Access to huge variety of models ( Centurions, Storm Talons, etc)
- Lots of love in the way of Formations, Supplements, regular updates
- $0 investment required as I already own everything

Cons:
- Tendency to get a little bored with the model range being quiet 'flat' ( See my previous blog of Soul drinkers... and they even had mutations!)
- Don't enjoy writing the lists as much as I do when writing for other specialist chapters like GK , SW and BA

BA
Pros:
- Access to sexy units like Sanguinary Guard and Death Company
- Models become diverse (Angel Wing motifs, actual wings, etc) as opposed to flat armour
- More customization of the army's appearance
- Chance to do that Mephiston conversion i've always wanted to do

Cons:
- Originally thought to just sell C:SM Specific units like Centurions and buy BA specifics like Death Co. however upon further consideration I realize i'd need to also replace all C:SM Squads with BA specific boxes (Tacs and Terms) to get the full effect, which could mean some money put in after selling others off
- Reduced range with less Units and formations
- Less love and support (Formations, etc)

As I say before, this is to be considered a " passing thought " and I just figured i'd get some external opinions after contemplating this for a few hours

I think I have a Blood Angel tactical marine kicking about somewhere from the newer box, if I do i'll strip it and give it a test run.

Thanks for reading ( and be free to be completely honest should you reply , it's what im after )

In all honesty I would go with vanilla marines. Lots of blood angels bling and trying to keep a quarter scheme clean -- that way madness lies...

I love this idea, I've been thinking about fluff for my own Inquisitor army and thought about setting them on an ocean world. For more scenic bases for your HQ you could build up steel structures over the rocks, suggestive of an ocean platform etc. I'm not sure how'd you'd explain the terminators you're after. Could be a good excuse to run a lot of fliers and skimmers though!

Yeah I actually agree, over night after posting I found a marine from the newer BA Tac box I had and stared at it for a few minutes planning how I'd paint it in my scheme and it did actually seem pretty tiresome

I think i'll be sticking with C:SM . Going to try get more models painted today ! Thanks for your input man

Thanks ! I am definitely keen to paint it up in the Oceanic scheme. I will be making the Rocks proper Rocks and those without water will have Gravel and Greenery to keep in theme with the living vibrant world theme. I just really want an excuse to base anything other than dirt, ruins or destruction

If you do be sure to drop some pictures ! I haven't seen anyone else do this yet and would be keen to see what others have done with the idea

Thanks for that man ! Ive always wanted to explore the world of resin water effects ever since a Golden Demon Winner was from my local area and he left his winning entry for Fantasy Single in the GW window for a while, it was unreal !

One day I will definitely be looking into this stuff, as for now I rely on paint and water effects from a supplier, Back2Base-ix

Thanks ! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it all laid out in the end.

UPDATE :

I managed to get 3 more marines painted yesterday. So far this totals 7 marines completed in this scheme, and so far I'm still really enjoying it . It takes a bit longer than normal with the Quartered scheme but I think it will all be worth it in the end !

All that is left is a Plasma dude, Missile and a regular bolter marine then that officially signals the first complete squad !

Very nice.

As a staunch Blood Angels player I am saddened that you did join the Sons of Sanguinius! However, I don't blame you in the slightest as the BA codex and formations are pretty uninspiring and aren't great on the tabletop (although the FAQ errata giving us WS/BS 4 Scouts is most welcome).

Haha ! I will do a BA army one day for sure... I've come very close a few times and even bought a box of Tactical BA marines to mess about with a while back

brushcommando wrote:Nice. Keep up the great work! -- also, not sure what all your collection consists of, but do you have any rhino-hulls planned?

Thanks man ! As it is I have a Whirlwind and a Stalker which use the Rhino hull, however I also have 4 On sprue rhinos I got from a mate which were destined for my space wolves but due to absolute lack of progress with that army I would consider transferring one or two

Aside from these, this army will also have ( general from memory):
- 10 Sternguard
- 1 Drop Pod
- 1 Whirlwind
- 1 Stalker
- 2 Dreadnoughts
- 3 Centurions
- 15 Terminators
- 20-30 Tactical marines
- 5 Sniper Scouts
- 1 Landspeeder
- 10 Assault Marines
- 1 Land Raider
- 1 Storm Raven
- 1 Stormtalon
- 1 Librarian
- 1 Terminator Captain
- 2 Captains
- 1 Terminator Librarian

That's just off memory as to what I have which was attached to this C:SM army

Ohhh yes...Im feeling a 5 year plan happening

Im just going to work on it when the inspiration strikes, for I have forced armies before and burnt out.

Any ideas what youd like to see next ? After this Tac squad is done Im thinking of changing it up with a Dreadnought or a Whirlwind.

Though that said, I feel I will likely be spitting my immediate future's time between them and some Sigmar stuff ( Change from 40k) .

Great looking guys. Love quartered armies, so cool looking, and unique.

I’d say do a vehicle next, just so you can work out your system for those. I should clarify, by vehicle, something with treads, not a dreadnought. Which is basically the same scheme as a trooper, just bigger.

I would suggest a rhino for your tac squad, but I notice a lack of them (and transports in general) in your list-o-stuff. You footslogging this army? What chapter tactics you looking at? As a custom chapter you have a lot of flex, but curious if one was at the top of the list.

As much as I love seeing dreads get paint, I’d do the WW. And mixing things up is a good idea. Slogging through tac squads can get tedious fast.

Thanks ! I've loved painting these guys up ( every pain staking brush stroke ) and it has been a challenge, but I put my best effort into every model I ever do and really appreciate the kind words

That's a good idea. I have a picture in my minds eye of how it will look but of course in practice is where the details really get ironed out. I agree a Rhino chassy is a great place to start with its boxy design.

Yeah I do have a solid lack of transport. To be honest it was never intentional, as most of this army pretty much was put together out of deals snagged online however from my previous marine battles ( Chaos, Codex or Wolf ) I have only used Rhinos maybe twice and just always seem to favour the drop pods, and even then never used more than 2. As a result I have very little experience using them, though have always wanted to throw some into the mix.

The 4 Rhinos I snagged from a mate are sitting just clipped from sprue in my cupboard, and I am strongly considering leaving 2 for my Wolves and taking 2 for these lads.

In terms of Chapter Tactics I know this might sound like a cop out, but I'd probably just leave it open on a match by match basis. This allows me the flexibility to swap between Flamers ( Sallies) Bolters ( Fists ) and other styles, so I don't get cornered into a specific play style or have to build my army any specific way. The last few times I've run my C:SM though I've just gone with Ultramarines for all-round tactics.

Definitely... I once tried to force a batch paint of a decent size army as to not field bare plastic in a tournament, and I ended up getting so burnt out I actually gave my notice ahead of time and didn't even enter. Couldn't stand the sight of them, and I never painted another one till the day they sold.
