Hello all.

So for an 40k event in August down at warhammer world, I will be taking my beloved Space Marines.

Now I dont really paint ever, and have some models which I needed to paint to close as I could existing scheme.

Started work on this contemptor dreadnought, and I think its come out quite nice, nothing to fancy.

Still few sections to finish but yh let me know what you think .

Looks pretty good.

The one thing that leaps out is the detail that you skipped. The scroll on the chest, and the grill things on the knees.

But what you have done is a solid job!

Edit:
Another thought: the powerfist should probably be done in red. Crimson Fists are also normally a darker shade of blue, but that’s something that can be adjusted to taste.

Outer Space, Apparently

Looks very smooth and clean - great job on that!

However I would suggest you shade the armour and the Assault Cannon - Nuln Oil would be ideal. You can just cover the whole cannon in this to make it look well oiled, and paint it in the recesses of the armour parts with a detail brush to define the features of the model

Hope this helps

Thx for the reply, general, yh, I have already nulin oiled the assault cannon and all the metal areas, perhaps the camera does not show it the best.

Also changed the shoulders slightly to match the sceme more.

The infantry marine was purchased already painted in that scheme, which I really liked, so it was good fun trying to replicate it the best I could with my novice painting time and skills.

It could very well be the lighting; I have the same problem with my miniatures. Still, I reckon the metal still looks very bright - I'd recommend going over it once more with Nuln Oil fairly liberally.

Also I dig the colour scheme that you're copying! Are you calling them Crimson Fists or are you thinking of creating a new chapter?

erm well for the event, I quite like the rules for the crimson fists/imperial fists.

erm however I have not really put much thought into creating my own chapter, ive had a number of people suggest some form of side space wolves chapter.

Most events are totally cool with you using certain rules for certain flavours of Space Marines if you haven't painted them as a chapter that has its own rules, so it should be all fine and dandy

I don't know how into the lore you are, but the Space Wolves have only had one successor chapter that fell apart due to the instability of the Space Wolves' gene seed. I'd personally make them a successor chapter to the Imperial Fists or the Ultramarines if it were me, but hey, all up to you!

Can I ask what else you have planned for your army to paint?

Very nice job!

I would echo some of the advice from other posters - carefully paint those details such as the scroll, and give the metal areas some more coats of Nuln Oil (and maybe some Agrax Earthshade too.) I know you mentioned that you had already given them a coat of Nuln Oil, but there's nothing stopping you giving it some more coats to introduce some more shade and contrast. I remember painting literally dozens onto a Knight Models Daredevil I painted. You don't have to slap it over the whole area, you can paint it in a somewhat controlled fashion into the areas that you want to be shaded. So you could paint another coat over the entire gun (for example) wait for it to dry, then paint another coat over just the underside of it.

The other thing that you could do that would really make the model pop is some thin edge highlights. Now, this can be quite tricky, so maybe practice on one or two of the marines before going at the dreadnaught. I wouldn't reccomend it to a novice except you seem to have really good brush control already (great job on the eyes!) You can probably google a few guides on how to do this, but the method I personally use is to make sure I have hardly any paint on the brush, and use the edge of the brush, lightly running it over the edges of the model. I wouldn't even do this on the whole model, as that can look like overkill. I'd just do the upturned edges. So that would be the edges around the top of the dreadnaught above the head, the semi-circular parts in front of the head and just above it, the shoulders, the weapon arm, and a little bit on the knees. Be careful, take your time, and have a bit of the basecoat at hand to tidy up any mistakes.

If you don't fancy it though, the mini already looks good. Good luck at the event!
