Subject: Painting Black Templars?

Guardsman with Flashlight

Hello everyone,
I have most of the modeling done for my new Black Templars army, and now I've begun working on paint. My first mistake was using Ceramite White, and I had almost forgotten how thick and tacky that stuff is. I've been reading that White Scars white is a huge improvement. Is this true?
I also need ideas on what paint to use for parchment, banners, and robes.
Thank you all in advance

Heya mate! First off, I would use a cream color for the pads. Something like a basecoat of Zandri Dust, followed by a wash of agrax earthshade, a layer of Ushabti Bone, extreme highlights with Ulthuan Grey.
As for the black, I wound use only extreme highlights, one followed by another, applying less everytime
Eshin Grey-->Administratum Grey--->Fenrysian Grey
Cheers!

I was thinking base coating the "white spots" with Celestra Grey for starters, then going ahead and using White Scars white for the final coat.
A cream color does sound pretty nice too. What I want is a bit of variation from the typical "Black and White" color scheme.

The way I paint my Templars is to prime them with a coat of very dark grey, typically Vallejo panzer grey surface primer. I then wash this with null oil. I find this gives you the chance to add depth to the black armour, and you can still apply the same highlights. I use this method as I like to add battle damage to my Templars using black and a metallic colour to create scratches.
Cream for the pads is also nice, adds a different element to the Templars. You can follow your own method and simply apply a wash into the recesses or even all over the pad to break up the White afterwards.
You could also get creative with some of the decorations the Templars carry to break up the black and white scheme,
For the robes, I typically start with zandri dust and work up to a bleached bone colour and a very fine white highlight. But this is entirely your choice, whether you prefer the standard tabard colours, or want to try different colours like reds see what you like the look of.

Trust to him to intercede, and protect his warriors true as they deal death on alien soil.
Turn their seas to red with the blood of their slain.
Crush their hopes, their dreams
And turn their songs into cries of lamentation."

The cream might be a nice scheme for the shoulder pads as it will add some warmth to the mini, and if you are following more traditional Templar colours it will work nicely with the red. Otherwise you run the risk of there being to great a contrast with the colder pads against the warmer reds, purity seals, and tabards.
Speaking of which the more cream shoulder pads will accent the tabards nicely as there should only be a shade or two difference between them.

What cream color paint pot should I look into?
Right now, here's what I have in mind.
I bought some cheap cans of spray paint at the local hardware store for like 85 cents each. They give me a nice flat black coat, that has a very slight shine but not enough for it to be glossy. I've been "priming" with this stuff for years and it's awesome. This serves as my basecoat. Thankfully it's thin enough where it doesn't take away from any of the details.
On to the shoulder pads, I'm thinking of doing the cream color (need paint pot recommendations) with a red trim around the edges. Similar to this; http://s81.photobucket.com/user/ultramarines/media/Black%20Templars/Sword_Brethren1.jpg.html
And then on to the robes, and crusader/purity seals. I was going to do Zandri dust, and later apply a darker wash, either black or brown. For the robes, the "front" will be Zandri dust, and the back will be Mephiston Red.

I'm not sure what the exact colours are, but in this example it looks like the pads are a shade lighter than the robes

I'm liking the look of that. What sort of paint pot should I buy for the cream color?
Are the highlights in Eshin Gray? If so, I bought some to do my Guardsmen in but I didn't like how dark it was. So now it just sits around as an extra.
For the robes, I was thinking of doing Zandri Dust as a basecoat, with a layer of Screaming Skull, depending on how light or dark the cream color is. I want the robes to be darker than the pads, but not so much that it's a huge difference. Perhaps just base coat with Zandri Dust and highlight with Screaming Skull.

I decided to go with a mixture of different bone types.
Starting with the Zandri Dust as a basecoat.

Here's one of them so far. What do you all think?
Still has some minor detailing left to be done
