If you’re reading this, you’ve stuck your nose into my new painting log. Welcome!

*EDIT*

As it turns out, I've managed to convince a mate, Maelstrom__ , to join in. He's the bloke who sent me the DE and various other goodies, and a heck of a sculptor/painter, so the log is about to be twice as good at least.

He'll be doing his own introduction below!

*/EDIT*

I suppose introductions are in order, as I’ve never really been active on Dakka. There’s going to be a wall of text below, so I’ll try to keep it short, and I've used spoiler tags to keep the post from looking too chaotic and getting too long. Name’s Rasmus, long term hobbyist, mainly plays Infinity, has a weakness for smaller systems and niche gaming stuff, likes painting.
Like, I assume, most of us, I have a large-ish amount of odds and ends that have slowly showed up in my drawers over the years. I have a tendency to start a small project, grow it for a month or 2, and then get distracted, leaving it to gather dust as I forget paint recipes and modelling concepts, a tendency I am certain that none of the good and disciplined people of Dakka can relate to.

Recently I’ve been more annoyed at this than usually, and I’ve made a decision to get a bunch of my old projects completed. I have a great deal of experience making this decision – I’ve made it just about every year. This time, however, is going to be different, at least until it isn’t.
I’ve decided to start a log here on Dakka to hopefully help me. Usually I either get distracted or get bogged down in details where I end up spending forever on a single model, so I’m hoping this’ll be different. I hope to both record my progress but also use the log as a repository for paint recipes, so I don’t forget them. I usually do, and it’s a right pain when I want to resume work on something.

I’ll be trying to complete these while I work on my “permanent” projects, as in the armies that actually get some playtime. This is pretty much solely Infinity, with my Military Orders being my focus right now. I’d like to get back into my Nomads, finish my JSA and expand my Ariadna, however. This also means you’ll likely see some updates that’ll mainly be these guys. Some Dark Elves will be making an appearance as well, however. All of these are long-term projects however, and most of the ones I’ll be focusing on are smaller ones that could conceivably be done in a weekend or something like it, if I painted with anything like the speed of a normal person.
Spoiler:

Gabriele de Fersen - I love this model.

Kight of the Holy Sepulchre, again one of my favorite models in the range.

These should be fairly self-explanatory.

A word of warning though, I’m rubbish at updating regularly. Painting time comes and goes as work and real life dictates.

My ever changing, and now hopefully shrinking, list of projects (I've included pictures in spoilers where I had decent ones - I'll be taking new ones when I dig the models out of storage) :
• Ronin samurais – Last winter I did a couple of warbands, including some terrain, for Ronin. I did 3 warbands, 2 samurai and 1 Ikko-Ikki, and since I still have some models left over I’d like to finish those to let me swap around a bit later on, if it ever takes off at the club.
Spoiler:

The conversions in question.

Ah, the Ikko-Ikki. A lovely cult hell-bent on cleansing Japan of foreign influence.

Standard samurai fare.

• Lion Rampant, Germans - I have a smallish Lion Rampant army, focused on an army of the Holy Roman Emperor around 1397. I got my mitts on some of the Perry plastic foot knights, and I’d like to get some paint on those.
• Gobbos – I may have accidentally ordered some of the Red Box gobbos when Hasslefree had their latest sale. Only 7 models, mind you. For now, at least. The thought of a goblin warband and some dwarves to complement them is tempting, however…
• Hazmat suits – Hasslefree models, I got these ages ago. As is typical of Hasslefree, they’re excellent sculpts and great casts too. I’ll hopefully be redoing them, they’re a small enough force that they can be done up quickly.
• Necromunda – I have a bunch of Eschers that need paint, although there’s a fair few done already.
Spoiler:

Because you can never have too many garish punkers in a warband.

40K chaos warband – I have about 7 chaos models for a little warband, and I think some of them could do with more work. At any rate, they could be expanded a little, since they’re fun to do. Maybe, I’ll decide when I dig them out.
Spoiler:

• Chaos army standard – a conversion I’d quite like to get painted.
• Epic Space Marines – I wound up buying 3000 point of marines lately. I’ve been doing them as Blood Angels in an attempt to paint them quickly, and I’ve been playing around with making my own models as well. Mainly vehicles.
Spoiler:

This is about half of what I have, points wise. There's a fair few assault marines, termies with land raiders, tacticals and rhinos plus some whirlwinds lying about.

• INQ28 – Again, small warband. I think I have a single model somewhere, and a guy who needs rebasing. Plus, what witchhunter can’t use some more armsmen / inducted guardsmen?
Spoiler:

• Sedition Wars – I backed it, ages ago. I’ve still got some of the backer models lying about, waiting for paint. These’ll be either quick jobs or high-level paintjobs depending on the casts, the Sedition Wars restic varies a bit in quality I find.
• Guardsmen - I once had a guard army. I’ve no desire to return to 40k, but for completeness sake, I’d quite like to do the 2 vet squads I started back then, and possibly, If things get out of hand, do a command squad.
• Skellies – A friend, Maelstrom, sent me a pack of skellies as part of a bits package once. I’d quite like to do something with them, perhaps as a adversary force for some adventurers? I think I’ve used some for a different project tho, so perhaps as a modelling project solely.
• Skaven – Maelstrom again, he sent me some skaven stormvermin too. These will definitely be an adversary force, led by a warlord model I picked up for cheap.
Spoiler:

• Zeds – I have 4 sci-fi zeds lying about, again courtesy of Maelstrom, needing paint.
• Novamarine command squad – I once had (technically still have, but I don’t play) a Novamarine force. I started converting a command squad for them, but got bogged down in finecast hell – I think those were the models that finally broke me off of GW stuff. I’d still like to complete them, however.
In addition to this there’s a load of stuff I’d like to get around to, like perhaps
Right now I’m working on this chap:

The big bad himself, Archaon, in his LE on foot incarnation. A big hunk of metal, and gorgeous to boot!
I don’t want to come off as a rabid GW hater or anything, but he does show what I prefer about the older models over the new style. The new Archaon is very ornate, loads of gold trim and in a very stylised way too. Don’t get me wrong, I can see why people like that, but I much prefer the simpler, more brutal design of this model – he’s not there to look pretty, he’s there to kill and/or sacrifice anyone who stands against him. I’ve got an army to go with him, but for now I’m focused on the DE as an army. I’m mainly doing him as an excuse to play around with black, and complementary colours.

I'll end this with a little request for anyone watching - I enjoy painting, and I enjoy getting better at it, so please, please pick out any mistakes or odd decisions you see. I'd really appreciate it!

Outer Space, Apparently

First off, welcome to DakkaDakka! (kinda)

You sir have some mighty fine painting skills - all of those models look very neat and clean. I love the effects you've added to the Infinity miniatures in particular, such as the effect on the swords

Also I dig those CSM; Word Bearers or Crimson Slaughter?

I have a similar problem with procrastinating on painting projects. I myself plan to start a blog when all my old stuff arrives from the country I just left, but in the meantime I set aside at least an hour a day to working on projects that I'll sell on to get a bit of dough

Hope you kick the habit and post regularly - I'd love to see more!

G.A

Thanks General!

Glad you like them, I think the swords are a good opportunity to introduce some contrast to the models.

The CSMs are.... Well, I did some Charlie Stross inspired background for my own splinter faction of the Word Bearers, so kinda?

Do toss me a link once you get the blog up and running!

Well Rasmus has managed to convince me to join him in his epic quest to cull the back log.... lets see how far we get.

So first up Hi I'm Maelstrom also known as Si, first time back on a forum since my Ammobunker days oddly enough the place I first came into contact with Rasmus. Now 5 years later he is still hassling me about unfinished projects haha

I've got a mixed bag of backlog projects to work through. Some such as my Heresy era word bearers have been written off and sold entirely. but heres a break down of what I have:

Frostgrave
- Multiple warbands, Roaming monsters and terrain
Infinity - Pano Military order, Yu Jing Imperial service, Combined Army, Terrain
Deadzone - Terrain, Plague, Veer myn, Enforcers and Asterians basically kickstarter V2 plaus extras
Dungeon Saga
Mars Attacks
Blood rage
Beyond the Gates of Antares - Starter set plus some Algoryn
Warhammer quest - Few bosses and Heroes to contribute to a friends copy of silver tower
40K orks - small force for zone mortallis games

My main project is my Tau Empire army, something that has spanned from their initial launch to the present day with them beign stripped and repainted. I've actually broken the back of much of the infantry and its now just onto Battlesuits and tanks.

So to wet the appetite heres a few pics of some of my assorted works:

I'm notoriously fickle so will flit between a lot of stuff on a nigh on constant basis, so you will have to put up with me whilst I get back into the swing of things posting wise too.

Some serious talent in this thread.

Since you mentioned the backlog i think we deserve pics to truly give us a sense of scale (and make us feel better or worse about ourselves).

Thanks!

Pictures of the backlog you mean? To be honest, I've got my stuff spread out a fair bit, so it'll have to wait for a bit - but it's extensive, take my word for it! I'll see about getting all the stuff out when I've got a slow day (although the way work's going, that might be a while.... )

Archaon's seen a bit of progress since last:

As always, your thoughts are most welcome.
Sword needs a bit of work and the base as well, but other than that, he's not far off finished. Still pondering what should take his place on the painting table, too.

Time to dust this off a bit, as Archaons' done!

Tiny picture, but I'm on vacation right now, and I had to grab it on the way out of the door. At any rate, he's painted and I'll happily call him done. Backlog reduced by one model!

I've also made a start on a Bulleteer Armbot for my Infinity PanO:

(IRL, the blue is less bright and there's a bit more shade, but for some reason I can never get decent pics of blue) I'm rather pleased here, I've been struggling with it for ages. Turns out the blue looks off to me unless I start it with the right shade of Vallejo blue and light blue and then highlight/shade from there.

So that's 1½ model off the backlog! Making great progress, huh?

...or not, perhaps.
A friend and I got the new mini-starter for AoS, just for SnG. I've gotten the Khorne half, as this way I at least have the excuse of having the largest bunch of models to paint when Mikkel outpaces me.
I've made a start though:

Seeing as how the marauer-chaps are bare-chested, this seemed like an obvious opportunity to test some loaded brush blending, as I think it works best on organic shapes. It takes a bit of getting used to, but there's definitive promise there and I think I'd like to expand the use of it. Already started the next, with a slightly modified skin recipe:

Other than that, the models are basically practice for painting speedy (for me) but decent quality models. I should be able to do 8 minis, after all...

Still, backlog progress: -4.

This is going to take longer than expected...

Update time - I didn't forget about this log, but life has a tendency not to respect my nerdery time.

I got the little AoS starter done, so now it's just a matter of finding a time and a place to play:

I'm rather pleased with these, as I wanted to try out some new skin techniques and practice my loaded brush blending. It's far from perfect, but I think I'm a fair bit better than when I started with these.

Generally, I think I've gotten a decent mix of quality and speed on these, at least speedy for me.

Of course, then WD came out, and I had to get the Slaughterpriest - he's a pretty good centerpiece. Looking forward to getting some work done on him, I've gotten a bit farther along than what's shown here:

There might be a painting contest here too, so I think I'll give him a go and see how far I can push it.

Finally, I've been struggling with this PanO drone for a while now, and I'm really rather glad it's done:

So, I figure I'm about breaking even in the number of models yet to receive paint compared to when I started this log.

Or I would be, if a friend didn't just drop off a box of the perry Desert Rat plastics, with metal command. Apparently I'm to play some sort of WWII platoon level game... At least I'll have the opportunity to get better at batch painting?

Any kind of thoughts or comments are more than welcome!
