Hi Dakka folk
So im almost finished painting this pathfinder unit and am looking for some advice/opinions on a rim colour.

Im thinking blue or grey so have attached a side by side comparison (haven't actually painted the "grey" one yet its just primer but im sure you get the idea)

Thanks in advance

What terrain will it go on? I like both. With the blue there are so visible like almost a ping on the radar while the grey is more stealthy not as noticeable.

Almost like paint for advantage so maybe the opponent may under estimate how many minis are actually there. I know, this will never happen, but the blue is like "here I am". It's almost like you will get more hits on blue than grey

In the end, I will say go with the grey, but not so dull, maybe a grey that is a bit more white. Forget what that colour is called.

I like painting the rims of my bases in the primary colour of some of my armies, such as Khorne Red for my Blood Ravens. However in this case white may stand out a little weirdly. You could go for the Sept colour, but if you only want it to be between blue and grey, I'd definitely take blue.

I just found the photo of a Pathfinder Shas'ui I did a few months back - I'll attach it here as you can see I painted the rim in a colour very similar to the main body armour. Lots of people think that's very weird, but personally I like my models to stand out and have very bright colours so that they don't get overpowered by terrain and are easy to distinguish.

Hope this helps

Of the two, I’d go with the grey.

Personally I black rim all my bases, be they snow, grass, or ruins. Makes for a nice disconnect between the mini and the table, and goes with everything.

Plus it’s slimming.

I forgot to say I try and make my bases brown with a brown ink or now a brown wash to give the a "wood" like feel to them.

Thanks for all the replies.

@Davor my terrain is mostly city ruins but I don't play with a game mat so the ground itself is open to interpretation.

@GA thanks for the tips I did try white but the model on the whole just looks too white.

@Nevelon thanks I plan to do all the different unit types with different coloured rims so may go black for firewarriors or stealth suits.

I will give one a proper grey coat tonight and post the results.

So im back with another comparison shot left to right we have administratum grey, original lightning bolt blue and coat d'arms shadow grey.

Would appreciate some thoughts on what people prefer, also open to suggestions for other colours if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks again

I've been doing "The Fang" for my snow based Blood Angels. I prefer it to any of those, it's most similar to the one on the right with just a bit more blue tint.

Contrarian inbound - I like the one on the right the most - seems to blend best with the base and the model

In my opinion, use a neutral, or at least unsaturated color for the base, rather than a bright, vibrant color.

If you pick a bright blue, green or orange, the rim will compete with the rest of the base, and even with the model itself, which is usually not what most people want. Also to consider, use a color that goes on easily and covers well, because you're almost certainly going to finish the rim last, and you don't want to have to do a billion coats to cover up the other paint you managed to get onto it (so, I would exclude orange).

Typical GW colors (dirt colored brown, and medium grey) are pretty safe -- and they also go well with terrain. Black is easy enough, dark grey works out nicely, dark silver (like leadbelcher) looks ok for some armies, and a dark brown metallic (like warplock bronze) is very easy to apply and looks sharp.

But I'm hardly one to talk. Through the years, I've used just about every color of the rainbow for bases at one point or another. When I first started 40k, I'd paint the bases a different color for every squad

No pic when I quote? I like the one on the right. How about adding some Tau symbols along the base? Maybe to designate what squat or what ever they are in?

Depend on the rest of the color scheme and basing, in space station=rim black or eshin grey, GW's steel legion drab works on most schemes, jungle=rhinox hide, ice=lighter grey such as dawnstone or admin grey.

They look lovely - that camera and lighting does much more justice to them than your previous photos. Great work!

Think you picked the right colour for the rims too
