Hello Everyone,

My first post, I hope its in the right place.

At Xmas 2015 I got an Imperial Titan to paint and as someone else gave me an air brush (Yes lucky or what!) I have really got into the painting side. I tend not to play the games.

I moved from GW paints to Vallejo as they work better with my airbrush and seem to run better off the brush.

The Problem:

I spent an entire evening painting the Carapace of the Titan and I love the paint job. Now I have a problem...I cant remember how I did it (yeah I know). I have tried to recreate he effect on the shoulder pads and leg pads but to no effect.

I have now spent a week repainting the other parts and no matter what I do they never match. I must have painted them over ten times now.

The paints I think I used are light brown, white and burnt umber...or mud brown or rust. All Vallejo model air.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Attached is a picture of the Carapace and an Air brush job to see if thinning the paint worked...obviously it did not :(

Many thanks,

Tef9

Could it be that they don't match, because you've painted them many times over previous coats?

Remember, acrylic paints (and especially airbrush ones) are translucent. So, if you paint light tan over black, it will look different from light tan over green. To cover a dramatically different color and achieve opacity, you're often looking at a dozen coats on those light colors.

One way that you can get them closer together in color is to mask out all the non-light brown parts , airbrush an acceptable wash, lightly thinned (like Agrax or Seraphim serra), let it fully dry, then airbrush it again with a light coat of the same color (the light brown that you used).

Because the light brown is really quite light, a GENTLE airbrushed wash will tint it all enough that a further coat should even the colors out.

The other thing you can do is to apply some washes, poaint out some details (like the ornate edges of the shoulders) and apply some weathering. Once you do that, somewhat different shades of a color tend to be a lot less noticeable.

Hi Talys,

Thank you for the reply.

I think you are right, I have been trying to get them to match all week. When I painted the Carapace I "Stumbled" around the paints a bit and it probably built up that layering till it looked right. I was going to do the metal parts gold but I wonder if a gun metal would look better.

For the other parts I could try a different paint scheme, still keeping with the worn look. It’s either that or undercoat and start again. Using light brown as a base colour and going from there.

I remember using a lot of brush work but I did use the air brush twice...

Why did I not just do it all at once rather than piece meal….sigh!
