Hello all,
My gaming group is currently working on a narrative campaign wherein we select a hero and some followers and build a warband that grows over time. We decided to do this after trying out the Path to Glory thing in the General's Handbook, which is an unbalanced nightmare.
I wanted to get your feedback and see what you guys think of the initial plan.
Notes:
1. All points values come from the General's Handbook. If we need to house rule something that is over or under priced, we'll review it later.
2. Units can be purchased without a minimum size, for the per model cost. Example: Rat Ogors are normally 2 for 120 points. They can be purchased as 1 for 60.
3. No second unit can be purchased if a similar, below minimum sized unit is already present. Example: If I have 1 Rat Ogor, I can add to it to make a 2 model unit (the minimum size), but I can't add a second single model unit.
4. The rules of 1, summoning rules, etc, from Matched Play will be in use.
List Building:
1. You have 300 points for your initial warband.
2. Your general can be up to 150 points and can be any single model warscroll with the Hero, Priest or Wizard keywords.
3. The rest of your army can be made up of any units, so long as you stick to one Grand Allegiance... no Battleline, etc, requirements.
4. Your Allegiance is chosen at this point and is set in stone. If you pick, say, Beastclaw Raiders as your Allegiance and then add some Orruks, you'll auto-switch to Destruction Allegiance instead.
Gaming... play a bunch of games over a set time frame, probably two weeks. At a minimum, play one game.
"Points Generation/Glory Phase"
1. Once per "game cycle", probably every two weeks, your warband can grow in size. We'll roll 2d6 on a chart and you'll get +1 for every 4 losses/ties, 2 minor victories or 1 major victory. The chart will tell you how many extra points you can get. We're thinking that the chart will range from ~60 to 120 points per cycle, so a somewhat slow growth rate. Remember that you can buy units without minimums. 100 points could get you a Rat Ogor (60) and a Rat Swarm (40), as an example. Alternately, it could get you a Plague Priest (80) and 3 Clan Rats (18) with 2 points left in the 'bank'.
2. Unwanted models can be 'sold' back for half points, rounding up. The Rat Ogor I bought for 60 points can be traded back in for 30. A 7 point Plague Monk could be traded back in for 4. Your general is set in stone and can never be traded back in.
3. Points are used to buy extra units or to roll on a unit upgrade chart. You'd spend XX points, nominate a unit and roll on a chart. They might get +1 to hit or +2 wounds for the "sergeant" or something like that.
4. Points can also be used to buy single use items. An example might be an "Elixir of Accuracy" for XX points that allows one unit to have +1 to hit for one combat or a "Scroll of Summoning" for XX points that allows you to cast a summoning spell/use an ability that normally wouldn't be allowed in Matched Play. It adds an element of strategic choice. Do I add a few models permanently, or do I get a one time summon that gets used up? We'll need to playtest the points and decide what these items would cost.
5. Ununsed points can be banked and carried forward.
That's the general overview. We're still trying to firm up the rules. Initial thoughts? What would work, what sounds crazy? Automatically Appended Next Post: I forgot to add, every unit would have to have a name. So, my 300 point starting war band might be something like this...
Skittertail Plaguemouth, High Priest of the Congregation of Putresence (Plague Priest, 80 points)
Plaguemouth's Flock (14x Plague Monks, 98 points)
Skrog, the "Muscle" (Rat Ogor, 60 points)
The Foulwind Twins (Poisoned Wind Mortar Weapon Team, 60 points)
That would be 298 points total with 2 points left in the bank.
