Hi guys, I got into 40k a couple of months ago after playing fantasy around 10 years ago in my teens. This thread is to showcase the progress I've made so far on my first army, a homemade Inperial Fist successor chapter named Knights of Terra. I'd love to know what you think. My painting skills are low, and the time I have for painting is limited, so I've gone for a scheme that is quick to paint. I do a squad in a couple of evenings.

I'm really enjoying collecting an army, and have had a brilliant first few games too.

Painting skills are LOW? Those guys look GREAT! Not a lot in the highlight department, but they look clean and very nice. They do look way too close to regular Imperial Fists, but that isn't a huge problem at all.

Thanks for your feedback I did think of adding some highlights, but thought I'd probably end up ruining them.

I like the yellow of the Imperial Fists, but not the symbol. That's why I decided to keep the yellow but do a different symbol.

There are a lot of successor chapters that do that I think, so that's not a problem.

As for feedback, I would work on giving them a highlight of a brighter yellow of your choosing, and painting it all over the armour but avoiding recesses, as the armour is looking slightly too orange. Don't get me wrong, yellow armour is arguably the hardest colour to paint so don't worry if you don't get it right first time. After all, it's practice makes perfect!

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

I think they are looking pretty good! I agree though that a highlight here and there would help. Maybe a 50:50 mix of lahmian medium in with the casandora wash would help tone down the orange too, if that was something you were wanting to do. Very nice and clean throughout though, which is the important bit.

I think they look really good. My only qualm is that the base rim is a bit too contrasting --- it doesn't meld well with the basing materials which appear to be brown/grey-ish?

I think the green you've used is a bit "too" green. Maybe a greyer/drabber green would work better? It really distracts my eye when I'm looking at the models.

This! Your painting looks awesome! True, they could use a little more highlighting, but for where they are now, you've done a great job!

My biggest gripe is the base rim....not really for any specific reason other then I (personally) think its really tacky looking. Your bases have turned out really nice, but the rim, i feel, takes away from that with how very green it is. If it was a darker green, or maybe even a dark brown or something, I feel it would make the base a more cohesive part of the model.

That being said, you should definitely be proud of these guys, as your hard work has certainly payed off.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Back when I used to play fantasy everyone did their bases green, like the image below. It was only when I had my first game with my space marines that I looked around and saw that no one did this any more haha.

Given how fast you knock these out I think youre being very modest towards your painting skills. Having seen them in person I can say they look great on the table top, very vibrant.

A thing I was gonna mention is if you dont fancy going into too much detail when painting the lenses on the helmets you can always paint a white line in the middle of the eye piece then go over it with a bright glaze like green. It gives a nice glowy effect and Duncan shows how to do it in his HH word bearers tutorial. https://youtu.be/vPH6qFskBzw

Also as others have said though if youre looking to improve you should definitely give some highlighting a go if youre thinking of going back to them.

Yep, I'm well versed in the old goblin green bases, but they tended to be used with basing material which was far more green than the grey/beige/dust your bases look.

Something like this, where the basing material blends with the green base rim:

Based on the feedback, I'm thinking of redoing the bases brown instead of green. Would this look better? I'm a bit worried that the brown bases with yellow marines would look a bit...drab.

Black has become popular and you could always use the same or slightly darker shade of grey that youve used on the base already

They look good. You should be proud.

One suggestion: as you did not drill the barrels, I would suggest painting black circles to make the barrels look hollow.

Dude, if you like the bases, keep them! Don't listen to me or any other internet stranger. I can't suggest a colour because I can't actually tell what the base material is coloured. If you like the green, rock on.

Personally I detest black rimmed bases and think they ruin everything...but I'm obviously a man of many tastes/opinions!
