Hi all, got into the hobby about a year ago and painted necron warriors but didn't get too far in due to irl issues cropping up. One thing that did disappoint me about the necron's though was the lack of colour on the warriors etc. At first i thought this would be a good way to get started but in truth i think it is partly the reason i ended up stopping for so long. I always thought that the Warhammer Sigmar models were so much more colourful so I treated myself to the starter set this Christmas and decided to go straight for the model I liked the most. The lord Celestant on his Drakoth.

I decided to follow the script on this one with just a few small changes to the painting guide but today I finally think I am finished painting him... Then I remembered I needed to base him and that i have never based before. I have lots of the materials for it just never actually properly made a base and I was hoping that someone on the forum would kindly offer me some advice as to what would go well with this model or things to try or even a good set of videos offering good basing advice? Also feedback on my model and areas i could improve or new things I could try would be appreciated.

Here is my model and I welcome any advice as to where I could improve it. I found the banner the hardest to do and kind of messed it up but I think it just about gets away with it.

Anyway any feedback and basing advice appreciated and thanks in advance.

pretty! First - do you have a theme for your army? you don't want to start making bases and then end up with a ton of different types (necessarily).

There's plenty of really good basing tutorials on youtube, eonsofbattle has a very simple series that might give you some ideas.

once you pick your theme, then you can decide how to base the model. You don't want to get too involved (unless it's a display model of course), and you want it to be pretty reproducible so you can do the whole army in it, with maybe some minor variations.

Example: you want to do a grass/steppe them.

Get some flock, some grass tufts and PVA (ie - white glue, like Elmers). Cover the base with PVA straight out of the bottle, dip base in the flock. Let dry. Once it's dry (I usually do a batch at a time and wait a day), tap off the excess, and, watching where the feet of the model sit, add some grass tufts.

You can also do similair with some sand, and grass tufts. Really just depends on your theme. You can get fancy, or you can go fairly basic. Remember you don't want to overwhelm the model itself (making the base too fancy for instance). You just want something that'll tie in with your theme, and with the other models/bases.

You can get a lot of basing items - stay away from GWs imo, they're very expensive and there are much cheaper ways to do it. Secret Weapon Miniatures makes/sells some great items; Scenic Express has a whole range of stuff; army painter carries grass tufts and flock as well as other items.

You can buy cork, break it up, prime and paint it to look like rock or broken ground really easily. Check model railroad supplies for rock and ballast. Also aquarium rocks are useful. Or again, break up cork really small to use as rocks.

Thank you for some great advice. Might look at a snow theme but then does a snow theme really suits this army? I'm not sue as I haven't ever actually played the game lol :( good tips on the alternative shops. Def gonna look to get some bits together.

When you said about PVA ing the base then dipping in sand/basalt/flock do you then put the model on top of the basing material or mark where feet go prior and dont PVA that part?

Will check some of the tutorials you mentioned and see if I can swat up a little.

Thanks again for advice.
