pretty! First - do you have a theme for your army? you don't want to start making bases and then end up with a ton of different types (necessarily).
There's plenty of really good basing tutorials on youtube, eonsofbattle has a very simple series that might give you some ideas.
once you pick your theme, then you can decide how to base the model. You don't want to get too involved (unless it's a display model of course), and you want it to be pretty reproducible so you can do the whole army in it, with maybe some minor variations.
Example: you want to do a grass/steppe them.
Get some flock, some grass tufts and PVA (ie - white glue, like Elmers). Cover the base with PVA straight out of the bottle, dip base in the flock. Let dry. Once it's dry (I usually do a batch at a time and wait a day), tap off the excess, and, watching where the feet of the model sit, add some grass tufts.
You can also do similair with some sand, and grass tufts. Really just depends on your theme. You can get fancy, or you can go fairly basic. Remember you don't want to overwhelm the model itself (making the base too fancy for instance). You just want something that'll tie in with your theme, and with the other models/bases.
You can get a lot of basing items - stay away from GWs imo, they're very expensive and there are much cheaper ways to do it. Secret Weapon Miniatures makes/sells some great items; Scenic Express has a whole range of stuff; army painter carries grass tufts and flock as well as other items.
You can buy cork, break it up, prime and paint it to look like rock or broken ground really easily. Check model railroad supplies for rock and ballast. Also aquarium rocks are useful. Or again, break up cork really small to use as rocks.
