So, getting back into 40k. My marine army is underway and it kinda paints and assembles itself. My chaos dudes though, they need a bit of work.

I've convinced myself that I'm going to have at least a set of Nurgle / Death Guard. I've got a bunch of old metal rogue trader era renegades and some metal Death Guard that will form the backbone. And I've decided that for the most part I'm going to convert my old style rhinos to chaos. I've also hit up eBay and snagged some that need serious love but I figure since I'm going to be doing some serious modding, that may be ok.

For my sanity, I need to put my notes and thoughts somewhere and since I'm likely to ask opinions, questions and for advice it may as well be here instead of a private google doc.

I have 8 old rhinos. My grognard gland is making me lean hard on seven Nurgle looking but I could probably force myself to be more generic with some of them so I can use them in other chaos confines (I probably will end up with a Slaanesh and Black Legion force too).

I've started with the tear-down and rebuild with chaos mods, and here's what I've got so far. I kinda wish I had pictures earlier in the process, but meh.

First set of questions ...

How much do you magnetize?

For instance, is it worth while to magnetize a kit to turn some of these into either Vindicators or Predators? Or is that generally a pain?

If you do, I assume you need a more serious magnet than the dinky ones I use for limbs. How big do you generally get to handle (say) a lead sponson?

For more minor vehicle additions (dirge caster, 2nd combi weapon, havoc launcher) how much wiggle room do folks usually go on WYSIWYG? Is "that's a combi melta" when it really is more a combi-plasma passable?

I'd want you to be super clear up-front about any stand-ins, especially when a stand-in involves melta weaponry, because the difference between S7 2 shots within 12" and S8 AP1 with extra D6 Penetration within 6" is pretty important.

As for magnetizing, I only really do that for main tank weapons or big tyranid critters. Most tanks have an optimal loadout you'll use 95% of the time anyways, so even that can be overkill. For Death Guard, you'll probably want all lascannon Predators anyways.

An old metal sponson is going to take some serious magnets, like 1/4", probably several, unless you want to risk it popping off when you move it around.

Nice rhinos!

I wouldn't want anything modelled to be misleading (so play your combi weapons however they are set up).

However, upgrades like dirge casters, havoc launchers, etc do give you some room to get a bit inventive with how you want them to look like.

I've got several spare razorback lascannon, am thinking of using two on a turret and two as sponsons. Not real sure I how I'm going to manage a rotation on the sponsons. How many folks play with stuck or glued side sponsons? You still measure from the gun tip right?

Do folks ever mod detachable vindicator bits?

Here's what I'm thinking - though it may be hard to see until I get a nice thin coat of one-color primer or paint these guys due to the different colors, etc.

The old style rhino plugs just about fit in the big hatch of the new rhinos / razorbacks perfectly. Just about. A bit of sanding and they do. I'm included (as most of these I've disassembled and started to repair / re-assemble to not glue any of those in place so I can move stuff around.

So I've got a set of things glued to those that can represent the most common chaos weaponry for Rhinos. Not leaping into predator / vindicator range yet - just the difference between generic rhino and one with a bit more kit. Then I can reassemble a bit as needed.

Two of the rhinos (barrels and rats) basically unkitted.

Zoom in on rats but with a combi bolter, combi flamer and havoc slotted.

Rats but with the havoc unslotted and a base plate in its place
