Thought I'd share my progress with my Imperial Fists.

They're set during the Schism of Mars so i got to have loads of fun making the bases. The yellow was achieved by using washes only, so its a much duller, grittier finish... which I definitely prefer over super bright yellow Fists.

"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Fantastic, the only thing I'd recommend would be to add some colour to the Stormraven, break up the big flat panels of yellow a bit.

Cheers man. Yeah i know what you mean, im still waiting for vehicle transfers to show up. Once they do they'll be filling the gaps on the wings and the hull.

Yep the yellow looks awesome dude. The grittier look really suits the fists, well executed

Very nicely done. I really like the chaplain model. Just that little pop of yellow amongst the black is great

Really cool man that gritty yellow really does work well with mk3 suits

They look good, really well painted. I do think they're desperate for a couple of contrasting bits on some of the models though. The darker yellow blends in a bit with the red dust and it kind of gives them a real blended look (might just be the table and the lighting too).

Looks good. I like the silver with the yellow

Really like your approach to Fists. The grittyness really captures their rough and ready nature. Love the mars style bases too . How did you get the metallics to look so dark?

Cheers man, I really wanted to achieve a grittier darker looking force. I wanted to get accross that they'd been in battle for weeks upon weeks and generally make them feel 'realer' than the other portrayals of the Fists.

The dark metal is literally just multiple coats of nuln oil over a leadbelcher base. Taking care to leave the edges free of nuln oil gives an edge highlight without having to edge highlight... super lazy but means you can get loads more done

Thanks dude!

The yellow is really easy:

Base Xandri Dust
Recess wash Seraphim Sepia
Liberal wash of Cassandora Yellow
Liberal Glaze of Lamentors Yellow

Only on Sigismund, highlight with Ubshanti bone before you start the yellow wash.

Wow, these are great! I'm going for a similar look for my IH. Really interesting painting technique using only washes. I think that it works quite well. Though it may need a slight highlight just to give them a bit more contrast.

Either way, keep it up mate

I too have just started a heresy era Imperial fists army. I 've painted up a few test mini's and I am not completely satisfied with them. I love the look you have achieved so I just bought the paints you mentioned and I am going to give your recipe a go. I have also opted to go with a dark iron for the edging rather than straight black, looks much better IMHO.
