Hi all,

After attending warhammer fest i saw the brand new death guard minis but they had been painted in the traditional death guard cream and green rather than the 40k pure green.

I've been thinking about doing death guard in 30k and 40k so to tie the two together i want to have a go at this scheme.

I was thinking spraying them white to start with obviously, but then I have questions regarding getting them that cream colour.

Should I stick with the white and build up washing them with seraphim sepia, so starting with it very watered down then gradually building it up to get a nice blend on the armour panels from the bottom up.

Or should I get some extra colour on there first in the form of a screaming skull or a lighter mix?

The green i'll probably wait and see what those new death guard green paints are like that I'm sure will be out the same time as the starter set.

Any help would be great!

Hello GKCM27

I've currently been doing a little experimenting with pre heresy death guard, I've tried multiple ways varying from white built up with washes to cream colours, I personally found from experience the colour Vallejo Ivory really gave the slightly creaminess to the scheme. I wasn't able to achieve this with any of the current GW colours however if you're not able to get your hands on Vallejo Ivory I'd recommend trying something like the GW paint flayed one flesh , this with a wash of 50:50 lahmian medium and seraphim sepia I felt gave a good colour.

The green I based with GW deathworld forest, then gave a highlight from above with elysian green

Hope this info is in some way helpful, good luck with the scheme!

Thanks for the tips, I might have to take a look at the Vallejo colour as i haven't really used any of their stuff before except a couple of air paints.

Might try out a couple of test schemes with flayed one flesh first as I have a pot of that already but if it doesn't work out i'll try your method.

I wouldn't. Well okay white as undercoat works but to build from start you need some other colour as the real base colour. Pure white should be used only on highlights. Okay MAYBE cream is different but for example when you paint white scars pure white is only on final highlights. Before that everything is off white.

Funny that you get better white by using less white

I've found decent success using a basecoat of Pallid Wych Flesh with subsequent washes of things like Seraphim Sepia (I used Reikland Flesh-shade, but I was going for a dirtier brown).

Pallid Wych Flesh is a really good off-white to be using in replacement of pure whites.

Ok so white only so far as the undercoat, but base coat something else. I figured this was the case.

Pallid Wych Flesh, i think that's a really good idea.

I'll have to have a play around of some unpainted MKIII marines i have.

Cheers all

After bit of a delay here is my first efforts with a scheme it's all very WIP, and a bit messy as this is a test mini but i've also had a go at doing some leaking oil effects and such as well which is all new techniques for me.

Anyway any thoughts or comments would be great

My steps were

White undercoat

One full cover in pallid wych flesh

one full wash in watered down (3:1) seraphim sepia

a wash of the bottom third of the panels in watered down (3:1) agrax earthshade

water down palid wych flesh and glaze downward from the top of each armour panel.

Then pin wash the recesses in straight agrax

highlight edges in white scar

the metal was base in sycorax bronze

wash in agrax

highlight in sycorax again

corner highlight and raised edges in runefang steel

weathering was nihilakh oxide for the metal

straight seraphim sepia on the armour panels running down from rivets etc
