I was very excited when I heard about 8th edition and decided to get back into 40k and finally build the Death Korps of Krieg armored company I've always wanted.
(now that the rules have leaked and the leman russ is bleh, I'm kind of sad as I built them mostly all with battle cannons, but I noticed now I'm just more into wanting to paint them and then throw down for an apocalypse battle anyhow!)

I Luckily had about 10 leman russes from back in the day when they cost around 35$, man those were good times!
I bought about 8 DKK mars pattern leman russes through out the years always meaning to finally work on them but never doing it.
through the extra hulls from the Forgeworld kits I was able to order bits online and build another 4 tanks with turrets from forge world.
with the dwindling Death Korps of krieg line on forge world I was unable to buy the battle cannon turrets I needed and had to go through ebay to get alot of them

so the plan is to building and paint about 22 leman russ tanks (8 of which are mars pattern tanks) hopefully in time to go to my first Adepticon next year, might even do a DKK cosplay with the army not sure yet

my old tanks, time to give them a lease on life reforge the life back into them!

I stripped down the 10 old leman russes as best I could and decided they would be my practice tanks cause I had no idea what I was doing.
13 year old me had tried to paint, of course not all the same color camo because who thinks that looks good??? problem was I also had really liked to mark up my tanks because I thought it looked "cool"
so I was gonna have to figure out how to work with what were "heavily battle damaged" tanks i had.

I'll try and keep the thread up to date with progress photos, hopefully I can remember to take them

paladinknight62,

I would not worry about your damaged tanks...when you paint them the same scheme those tanks blend in. If you check out my Necromundian PLOG I have a heavily damaged Chimera that does not really look out of place with it's mates.

Good luck with your PLOG.

Cheers,

CB

Hi Captain Brown!
I will keep this in mind, I've been doing a lot of work and will be posting a bunch more pictures also a rant about the Forgeworld Leman Russ kits

assembling the Forgeworld Mars Pattern tanks? it was awful I don't recommend them, trying to get the 2 tracks to line up evenly with the resin hull was like impossible! some how even some of the thick hull pieces were warped and I could not tell until I started gluing on the sides.
I finally after about the 5th tank or so figured out it was best to just scrap all the plastic guide lines on both sides of the plastic track sides, to get the hull piece to sit flush with the 2 side track pieces. 3 of my expensive forge world tanks wobble now and its super unfortunate. I was surprised to find no one else
really mentioning how hard these were to put together or doing a step by step assembly, maybe I just had a bad bunch of models I'm not sure.

I decided I wanted to magnatize the newer leman russes I had built, it took a while but it was well worth it I think and makes it super easy to switch out the guns on the turrets and sponsons.

here are all the tanks almost all assembled and some of the older tanks primed

I did some painting starting with the 10 older Leman Russ Battle tanks to practice on. I went with a Panzer Grey with a White Regimental strip and a number marker from the Death Korps of Krieg transfer sheet.

The Filter I used might have tinted the Grey color a bit too much Blue. I'm gonna have to remember to thin it down for next time. Gonna do some scratches and marks now on then, Hoping I can make the huge battle damage marks somewhat realistic.

Hey, looks great. I've always loved the DKoK. I'm excited to see your work, also have you though about getting turrets for Exterminators and annihilator see how they might be really good in 8th.

Thanks! I've always loved DKoK since they were released way back when, I wish i could have afford to get a lot of the cool stuff that has gone out of print back then but oh well.

I made an order to Forge world and it just arrived yesterday, in it was 3 annihilator turrets, I also already have about 4 Exterminators turrets already. I can't wait to see the rules for the DKoK, I'm stoked that they might actually be a competitive army this edition as Hordes and Artillery seem really good this edition!

Yes! the Airbrush speeds things up really fast! also once I figured out that Vallejo Air paints still need to be thinned more, It went by a lot faster as it was clogging a lot less. I'm gonna probably take my time more with the paint chips as I'll be doing it by brush.

Yeah, I wonder if forgeworld will mash the Arty and assault brigades. I play DKoK assault brigade. I hope the come out with rules soon.

its very slow going working on 10 Tanks at once, Painting on the paint chips is very time consuming. But i feel its worth it. I tried 2 different ways to paint the heavy battle damage on the tanks.

The first attempt I was too broad with the dark brown rust color and I feel it should have been more focused in the actual holes in the hull, also I tried a dry brush on them and I'm really not liking it.

I'll update the second much improved tank when I get home!

If you use a sponge for weathering it makes the whole chipping paint effect much faster.

I did the sponging as well, but only in the dark brown color, I might need to sponge on a dark grey to simulate the primer

Thanks! I'm very excited to get them all done and have a huge battle of 8th edition with them!

Here's the results of the paint chipping, which I found to really give the tanks a much more realistic feel. I'm gonna be trying out some of the AK interactive weathering oils to try and do some streaking effects and then try and do some mud effects after that as I saw a youtube tutorial I really liked!

I feel I did a much better job on this heavy battle damage, this time I took my time and painted each hole indiviually and put a wash in each one. I feel it blends alot better with the tank I think

I can't decide if I should sponge on some dark grey as well with the dark brown to simulate the primer, I'm not a fan of sponging on shiny metal colors despite alot of the Warhammer TV videos show to do, as It kind of clashes with the grey too much and its not realistic anyway.

and here is a teaser for what is to come after I finish the 10 practice tanks.
