So I had a great idea, a flesh tearers army styled after a army from 2nd/3rd edition, with the goblin green bases and all that.

So heres where I need your help!

Which miniatures currently avaliable from gw suit the old style of the game. (Im not amazing at conversions but parts swapping is fine!)

What paints would be best to use to replicate the vibrant colours of the earlier editions?

My final question isnt entirely belonging here but how were the old blood angels armies arranged? I cant find any good references online

Thanks for any help

You can find loads of older marines on eBay etc. The basic space marine still looks the same, but they had a lot less crud on them back then. Best route would be to grab up a 2nd edition Angels of Death codex for inspiration.

This is the book you want:

Thank you so much! I can't pick up bits from ebay due to lack of online banking, would getting a regular/BA squad and removing the more gawdy iconography do? Maybe chuck in a few mk4 bkts for added flair?

Also thanks for the heads up on the book! I'll have to track down a copy.

Basic marine kits would still work, but you'd want to avoid silliness like the Sternguard models, etc. The MkIV squads from HH would work fine.

Just a simple google search shows almost everything you could want from a colour perspective.

What do you mean 2nd/3rd style???

That's what my current Flesh Tearers army looks like. are based goblin green. I did start them some time after 3rd rolled around.

As far as parts, the most iconic thing of 2nd edition was the beakie space marine helmet. Talk to any of your SM playing friends, most people have a lot of those lying around.

As far as colors, BA were painted in Blood Angels Red long ago, which was a sort of orange color. Coat D'Arms still carries the original colors from GW (Godlin Green, for example is the old Goblin Green). Just get their version of BA Red, or I would suggest maybe Ruby Red (which is more a stop light red) to differentiate from BA.

MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER!

Ahem. Ok got a little excited there. I'm collecting a retro 2nd edition Blood Angels Army.

For troop choices, you can probably get 2nd edition tactical marines pretty easily if you look at local ads or somesuch. I've found a ton of them this way because they were either part of White Dwarf Subscriptions or because they were from the old Starter Paint set (which was only discontinued in the past year or so).

Model wise, a lot of the BA range actually dates back to the 2nd edition. Dante, Mephiston, Tycho, and Corbulo. While they're not Fleshtearer characters, you can modify them to be characters for your army (since, back then, these would be some of the only available models anyways).

Finally, The Space Marine Biker model (and only that one) has basically remained unchanged except for the backpack since 2nd edition. You can also get the original Space Hulk Terminators from the "Build and Paint: Space Marine Heavy Assault" for a cheap price. The latter you'll need to find a supplier since it's part of the "Battle for Vedros" line.

If you would like I'd love to swap pics and ideas.

Hello!

Ohboy! I actually already own the space marine heavy assault set and I was planning on using those models for this project. The set also comes with the AoBR dread which is almost a dead ringer for the old metal one.

I was thinking of using Corbulo as a regular Sang priest, the only model I'm kinda stuck on is figuring out a decent way to convert Seth himself. I guess I'll have a look at what other old style marine characters gw still has avaliable and take a pick.

And yes I'd love to idea swap with you bud!

I would probably use Dante with a headswap and weapon swap.

EDIT: Also the current plastic Dreadnought existed during 3rd Ed, so that would be another "direct" model you can use I think. At least I think the Dread was made just before the 4th ed codex dropped.

I'll try and use Dante for a Seth conversion but idk if my skills are that great.

Also awesome! Thats another model I can use! As for rhinos and such, I might use the fw heresy style ones.

THat's a very old standard marine with a combat knife. He has one of the Fleshtearer's Shoulderpads, which GW still makes if you do a search on their website.

Awesome! I think I can pull off a similarly cheesy pose using the BA/vanilla tactical squad. im just glad to find out they existed so early on

Yep, that image is driectly from the Angels of Death codex. Not a special shoulder pad - simply painted (and poorly - you can see the white circle in the middle and the small saw-teeth painted around it).

I'll snap a few more from the codex to give you an idea of how they work, but the codex is definitely a treasure trove of quality fluff/lore/background.

The 2nd ed. codices were some of the best ones they ever did with regard to fluff/lore/organization etc.

Here's a few snapshots from the codex to give you an idea of the 2nd ed. colour palette/organization of the Blood Angels, etc.

The third Ed Codexes are also a treasure trove of conversion and modelling ideas, like rolled up tissue paper with twine and glue to form rolled up tarps on the side of vehicles.

There's also this:

http://www.solegends.com/citcat2002cgsm/index.htm

It's the collector's guide for models of that era. it should be all models that were from 3rd edition and before, as well as featuring some showcase pieces of converted models.

Thanks again! I own the 3rd ed rulebook as well as the 2nd ed codex imperialis and Dark millennium books (and some white dwarves from the late 90s which include BA) , which have been a big help on my research quest.

One looks to have much darker red and a black boltgun vs. the brighter red/orange and the red boltgun.

I'd imagine someone makes some aftermarket Fleshtearers decals for the shoulder pads.

EDIT: If you decide to go with the brighter older school look - consider Army Painter's "Pure Red" spray. They have three red primers: "Pure", "Dragon", and..."Chaotic" red. The "pure" is definitely more of a brighter red. Here's a picture I found of some vehicles primed that colour:

That with some orange-esque highlights might give you a very quick and easy primer/base coat. Hand-paint or spray the black and you're 90% there.

"Dragon" Red is a darker more rich red. It's not quite as "bright 2nd ed!" as Pure red though.

Alright thank you! I'd either use the red spray or apply coat de arms red paint over a white basecoat

Yeah, I'm a huge proponent of Army Painter sprays (if they match your army). Prime and base coat in one application = saves a toooooon of time.

I'm an old BA player from 2nd ed. My marine army eventually got large enough I began to split it and repaint into a Flesh Tearer and a Crimson Fist army. The great thing if you want to collect the old models is you can totally strip those metal guys down and rebuild them. They don't look bad with the modern arms and guns on them. My local stores have bins of used minis and I've pulled gobs of them out of there or gotten them on eBay.

Nice! I noticed you can get the old metal bodies fairly cheap from ebay, so I might pick up some of those
