I am currently going to use the dipping method on my sons new T'au army, but in order to keep the paint schemes finish matching, I would need to somehow dip the flyers and skimmers!
I quick searched the web and didn't find what I was looking for.
Has anyone had experience with dipping larger models that don't fit in the can? Is there a tutorial that I overlooked in Dakka?
Please, keep the "dipping is stupid and dumb" comments held back. I know that a lot of you HATE the dipping method, but I really would just like to try it out.
Thanks in advance

What about pouring it over the model onto a pan so you can pour it back into the can?

Dipping doesn't work as well for models with large flat areas, but if you want to do it my suggestion would be get a big arse brush and slop it on that way. You'll have a bit more control to direct it where you want it.

I did an all tank army using dip. 14 Leman Russes. Super easy and I was real happy with the results. Easy peasy.
Needs:
Two dollar store baking sheets.
Can of walnut color Minwax.
2 big, cheap brushes.
Steps:
1) Over one of the baking sheets liberally coat the tank with your dipping stain.
2) With the second brush, move the dip into the deepest resesses.
3) Wipe stain off brush, remove most of the stain from flat surfaces where it will pool.
4) Place model on second baking sheet to dry. DO NOT TOUCH. Will take about a week to dry fully.
That's it.

Yep, brush application works - I do this for terrain tiles.
A note on brushes - really difficult not to ruin them so get cheap ones. However, cheap ones tend to shed which you definitely don't want so work the bristles roughly before you start using it to remove as many loose bristles as possible.

Brush works, but make sure your dip is nice and thin - if it's aged at all and starting to thicken, don't! I normally dip models by actually submerging them in the can - I tried brushing two tanks last week and while it worked - the dip was a bit thick and you can see a few brush marks.
I'm not going to re-do them or anything, but it will bug me on occasion.

Awesome! Thank you guys! I'll attempt the brush and pan. I just bought two cans of walnut minwax. one to dip the models and the other for the brush and pans. I'll make sure that it's shaken up well prior to applying to avoid the thick stain and brush marks!
Thanks again guys!

I "dip"all my models, as I like the increased protection from wear and tear that a coat of dip and the resin based matte varnish affords. By "dip", I mean generously applying dip onto my model using a brush, and then cleaning up thick pools at least two times during the drying process. It works for vehicles too, but you have to be careful with old dip, as suggested by elbows.
