Subject: Commander_nightfliers Glorious Return to 40k, A Mentors Chapter WIP thread
after many years (dipped out arround the beginning of 7th) and many life happenings i wont go into here, I am making a return to 40k. (mostly as a side game for now but we'll see, Im still a huge warmachine fan with no intentions of leaving that game anytime soon)
having close to a demi-company of space marines (raven guard) left from the old days, (gave away my tau as a wedding gift) I figured that would be a good base to play with, get the new starter box set and the codex at some point, (after my own wedding) and ill have a decent bunch to play with, some new toys to enjoy, and all the rules i need. all for about 200 bucks, which i could conceivably get for Christmas. however i have a problem. having advanced in my painting skill, my raven guard look like crap. And after finnaly getting into highlighting, im finally done painting black. after looking into the sucessor chapters of the raven guard, as i do still love the raven guard battle style (fluff wise, not sure how they play into the new edition, though i have heard they are quite good, though i dont know why as of yet) I ended up between the Knights of the Raven and The Mentors. I decided on The Mentors after deciding that knights of the raven would be too similar in apperance to grey knights which i want to get at some point, and a whole army of metalics just sounds like a bad idea. Also after reading into the fluff, they have good reasons to go between Ultramarines, Raven Guard, and Salamanders and would likely be receptive of the primaris marines as well.
heres some test models, i have some old dark vengence models (not a complete set, no termies, chosen, or chaos lord) and due to my lack of plasma, as well as a lack of a decent looking captian, I figured i could make some of the models work, carve off the raised shoulder icons and the rest work into the company fluff. I do like the way they turned out, the bright red and dark green give the model some really nice contrast over just the off white. I plan to get some nice shoulder pad adornments, as ive never been much a fan of transfers. Shapeways seems to have some nice stuff.
fluff stuff for the company
reasons why i could run mentors as Ultramarines, raven guard, or salamanders
Spoiler:
chapter is from classified host. though due to their seclusiveness and perchant for rapid, precision strikes, they are suspected to be from raven guard stock.
Due to a gene seed mutaition of their particular chapter. They are borderline geniuses, particularly in the art of observing, learning enemy tactics, and adapting to it. each one of them can be considered equals of a professor of warfare at a military acadamy. This adeptness at tactics gives me good reason to run them as ultramarines. im currently leaning this way. the ability to dominate the command point game seems really powerful. this also makes them prime inquisitorial choices, and i quite enjoy the inquision in the fluff.
they are also testers for new (old?) tech from the mechanicum, and also enjoy good relations and are often quite mechanically adept themselves. which gives them above average quality weapons and armour. its a bit of a stretch, but the salamanders chapter tactic seems to fit this well. and being able to have that many free rerolls independent of possitioning seems really, really good. so this will be worth the attempt.
company fluff
Spoiler:
due to their unique abilty to learn the enemy tactics, this gives them a particular weakness when fighting chaos. However, this does not mean that they just dont fight chaos. the chapter has decided to dedicate one of their battle companies to fighting chaos. and will receive extra training into using theyre particular gift in anti-chaos warfare. Theyre captain, Kaen Hel-Elaras was gifted the oportunity to actually train with an Ordo Hereticus inquisitor, learning how to master the art of fighting chaos. As well as teaching his battle brothers to do so as well. After returning from the front lines in fighting chaos, each brother is debriefed by only the highest level of the chapter. then each brother gives a vow of silence regarding what they have learned, only speaking about it with his chapter brothers and members of the upper echelons of the chapter. This has given them the title "The Keepers of Secrets". Kaen himself is extremely reclusive, rarely speaking unless spoken to, and often when he does contrtibute to a conversation, only speaking a few words at a time, The chapter master his only confidant. He is known as "The Silent Sword" one of the best swordplay masters in the company, weilding the massive relic blade, Dark Guildence, as fast and acurate as one would a rapier. many of the chapters champions have trained with the quiet master. He has also recieved a unique set of artificer armour. created by, unbeknowst to him, by an artificer of the grey knights chapter, giving him not only superior physical protection but also spiritual protection (represented by the relic, armour indomintus) he often wears robes to hide the sacred runes on the armor, lest prying eyes dig too deep.
