Thought you guys might be interested. I made this from scratch using 3D design software and a printer. Very quick paint job. I needed a ride for my Blood Claws. If you like what you see, check out my signature for a link to my Thingiverse profile.

Image scaling is adding a weird pattern that isn't on the actual model. Then again, this is more about the design than the paint job. Also, this was printed at a 0.2mm layer height. If I had printed at a 0.05mm layer height (50micron), it would have looked better, but taken longer.

I like the general design a lot. It seems not-quite-finished though.

Perhaps a few accessories from the actual Rhino kit would finish it off?

I also find myself wondering whether I could scratch build the necessary parts to convert one like this, as I do not have a 3d printer.

I agree that it looks like a rough prototype. There's a striking lack of detail, and the striation from the layers is very distracting.

I'm also curious: why put wheels on a rhino? I think treads look better.

Why put wheels on a Rhino? I think wheels look better. Different strokes for different folks.

But yeah... this is very much a prototype. Literally first one off the assembly line. It was also printed at a low detail level and given a quick drybrush. That tends to really call attention to the layering. With a higher detail print and a paint job that takes longer than 5-10 minutes, it won't really be noticeable at all.

I'm working on adding headlights, weapons, additional details and an optional Razorback turret for the Mk2 version. The Storm Bolters and Hunter-Killer missiles are meant to snap into the round connecting points on the sides towards the front. It'd definitely missing a few details, but looks pretty good on the table as is.

Here's an unpainted shot where the layering isn't quits as noticeable due to the lack of drybrushing. ORANGE!

The most important thing when it comes to your models is of course what you want, not some random commenter on the Internet (such as me). I was just wondering whether the wheels were chosen because of fluff, aesthetics, or some other reason. There may, for all I know, be a chapter that doesn't use treaded vehicles. Knowing the reasons behind someone's aesthetic choice helps you appreciate their efforts better.

The new (orange!) Rhino looks better, but any paint job, not just drybrushing, can bring out and highlight shortcomings in the texture. I've seen plenty of mould lines that were hardly noticeable before painting jump out at you afterwards. I'm a mould line removal fundamentalist now.

Looks cool, and hats off for being able to design things in 3-D. I might have mixed feelings about it in 28mm without adding bits, but at a smaller scale it would be perfect.

Once I'm happy with the design, I'll print one out at high rez and polish it smooth with a high grit sand paper. The texture at that point should be at least as good as the official kit. It's not worth going into that sort of effort on a prototype.

As to the reason I went with wheels... there really isn't one. I just thought wheels would look cool. The Rhino chassis is iconic, but also kind of boring at this point. There are so many of them floating around and I wanted something different. I had seen a wheeled Chimera conversion kit somewhere and thought that a wheeled Rhino kit might also look cool. From a fluff standpoint, you're looking at either a Techmarine/Magos who found a new STC fragment detailing a wheeled Rhino chassis variant or some grade A tech-heresy. I'm good with either!

I have the wheeled Chimera kit. I think they look way better.

I like Rhinos anyway, but I like your wheeled version too. It looks slightly reminiscent of the transport from Aliens. Khurasan make one.

Actually, just looking at that makes me think you should put some trim around the wheel arches.

I think you're right. That's solid feedback. I think I'm going to.
