Does anyone have any ideas on how to build a staff of light? They're typically only available from resin cryptek kits and the new Flying cryptek.

The rod of covenant would be a good candidate, except it is easily recognized as being one. Could perhaps rearrange some of the fins on the side, perhaps add one set

I want to say you're probably overestimating how easily recognizable a rod of the covenant is to non-Necron players. Xenos armies tend to get away with a looser take on WYSIWYG a lot more than human ones. You're definitely right that it is the prime candidate for a staff of light conversion, though. No doubt about it.

Different configurations from the rod of the covenant are the way to go in my opinion. It's what I did back when we had harbingers with different sticks and I think even if you think the rod of the covenant is recognizable on its own, as soon as you remove the Praetorian and couple it with a Cryptek instead you'll get an easily identifiable model that I doubt anybody will question.

My examples:

Considering the Rod of Covenant is only carried by the Praetorians, who are a rather recognizable unit with their backpacks of shiny stuff, it's not that hard. Similarly, if you look at sources that have the Staff of Light, like the Crypteks, you'll notice it has a rather sharp resemblance.

My Cryptek's got a Rod head on the Barge Scythe Arm, I filed down the radiator section, did a little trim on the wire so it wasn't overlapping into the radiator, and that's pretty much it.

Thanks, yeah if I clear out the little extra thing in the tip and rearrange some of the small pins, perhaps add a small ball (greenstuff I guess) at the other end, I'll be good I think.

Only doing this once for now

It's also worth considering that a number of special characters have staffs of light with a divergent design from, well, the norm we got by way of the armory drawing in the codex, I guess. There's not much standardization for this item.

The one on the Overlord on page 72 of the codex seems pretty good.

defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

There is no overlord on that page

Bottom Right of the page, it's a modified version of the Overlord on Foot, with a staff head comprised of two warscythe blades on either side of the sphere.

Hm page 71 perhaps, big picture with novokh fighting against salamanders?

Nope, it's on page 72. The Deceiver is on page 70 and page 71 has Imotekh, Zandrekh, Obyron, the stock Overlord in Sautekh colors and just the left edge of the Novokh versus Salamander diorama. The conversion is close enough in appearance to Zandrekh's Staff of Light that there should be no complaints on its use.

Ah other language perhaps? 68-69 has those CTans in mine. (English)

Yeah and Nemesors stafff of light certainly looks like a modified praetorians rod

Nope. Mine is English as you'll note my flag shows me in the US.

Turn to page 70 of the codex and see what's there.

EDIT: Also count the number of pages between 31 and 35.

Page 70: 4 necron characters and part of said diorama (continues onto page 71)

Page 31: last page of chapter of fluff
Page 32-33: artwork with necrons and ultramarines
Page 34-35: 2 pages about Imotekh

And did you actually turn to those pages or did you just read the table of contents?

There's a big Novokh vs Salamanders battle shot on 71/72, in the big pictures section of the book before the dynastic codes.
