Is there an affordable alternative to convert a regular knight into Strix, Preceptor, Magera?

Do the special plating on the chassis matter?
It just seems like the guns and melee weapons are different.

That's exactly the difference, is the armaments. Convert them and you're set. The rest is cosmetics.

I would like more examples like this.

The armour plating on the Magaera & Styrix is to reinforce that they're Mechanicum Knights. Try something like this.

The lightning cannon & Volkite chieorovile aren't the easiest things to kit-bash.

I was going to suggest TaroModelmaker, but he's "taking a short break". Have a look round Etsy & Shapeways.

Blood and Skulls' Medium Magnetron cannon will fit a standard Knight mounting plate with some finesse. The profile is slightly rectangular for the mount, so the Thermal Cannon shield is your better bet, just need a little extra material to fill the rest of the mounting.

Scale Reference Shot.. I went and looked in my small collection of his equipment, and dug out my Medium Magnetron, pictured on the left compared to a Thermal Cannon layout.

The Other weapon is one of his Sunfire Laser Cannons, though the Medium Laser Cannon will also fit.

The Styrix and Magaera are armed with specific weapons, their chassis are representative of their self-healing ability, their head optics represent their cover-ignoring ability, their special 4++ 5++ melee comes from their unique shoulder socket mounted shield generator, and their unique graviton gun or plasma fusil is mounted replacing the shoulder heavy stubber.

As long as you model each of these components (which normal knights do not ever have: default regeneration, cover ignoring, shoulder weapon, special shield generator, unique gun arm) then you are fine. It’s just a lot of differences to the normal knights.

Preceptor is much much much more like a basic knight, it basically is a basic knight except for gun arm and shoulder gun.

Need tips and tricks on how to scratch build Volkite Chieorovile from existing gw bitz.
