Hey guys im new to warhmmaer 40k and ive noticed my basecoat paints chip off the models if i scratch it lightly. Ive undercoat the model.with chaos black then done a spray of leadbelcher. They seem to stay fine until i put a basecoat of mephiston red over with a few thin layers but still seems to come off any suggestions would.be great

Don’t scratch them?
I’m curious as to what effect you’re going for with that paint scheme?
I believe that Mephiston Red is a “base” colour, isn’t it? If so, to get thin coats, what are you thinning the paint with?

You need to prime the models. Black or grey should work for you.

Yep, spray with primer first, then apply your base color in smooth, thin coats until it's the intensity you desire. No real need to put leadbelcher under your base coat unless you're planning on doing some kind of chipping effect or you're putting a super thin glaze of red over the metallic color just to tint it.

Also make sure you give the primer time to cure. I usually wait until at least the next day before painting over the primer.

Ive started painting new models from speed freak box so ive sprayed them black then done a spray of leadbelcher just to save time. Ive used mephiston red as a base for an evil sunz scheme so ill start with mephiston red then wash it and layer up to to a lighter red just dont wanna do all tht and it just rub off kinda thing lol

I assume you're spraying LB to save time on the engine parts later? If that's the case I recommend spraying only the specific pieces, before assembling. Trying to paint a model that's coated in metallic is just going to be a nightmare and will probably put you off painting. As other have said, get a grey primer. Apply this first. Any parts that need spraying, do this next, then assemble and brush paint as required. Personally I find grey is the best base colour as it allows you to see your shadows and highlights better, and is easier to layer over than black.

Yeah using lb to save time still in sub assembly but some of the parts that are gonna be a different colour are silver. Do some base coats struggle to stick with a metallic or does it just take.more coats to get better coverage?

That's the kind of thing that will vary greatly depending on paint brands, batches, environmental conditions etc. How glossy does the lead Belcher spray turn out when it dries? Most GW paints are pretty satin and I imagine the sprays are even more so, especially a metallic one.

yeah, you want as few unnecessary layers as possible really, as they could cover details once further layers are applied. another suggestion is to apply your LB by brush to areas its required. this will allow you to be more specific in your application.

doesnt look too bad to me. if you must spray the entire subframe with LB, then you can always paint the areas with a black base to reset it before laying the red.

Yeah, looks good. once you're finished, use a matte sealer to spray it and that paint will stick forever.

The Warhammer TV tutorial for the Dragsta is painted over a base of Leadbelcher (without the Chaos Black underneath) with the crew in Zandri Dust and the wheels in Chaos Black.

Honestly I'd go with the tutorial by a professional painter before the store manager, who may just be trying to sell you an unnecessary can of Chaos Black.

yeah, dont fall for that. the chaos black sprays are just overpriced cans of paint, not a proper primer. go to a hardware store and grab a can of generic rattlecan primer. not sure what the brands are in aus, but over here stuff like rustoleum, which is used for outdoor painting of bbqs and the like, or even an auto primer. the advantages they have is that they are very strong, and provide a very good surface for subsequent paint layers to grip. you will save money and have a better product. that may be why your paint is coming off in the first place. also, it doesnt have to be black. I prefer a grey primer as it shows your highlight/lowlight areas as youre painting.

You need to do a Testor Lusterless dull cote matt varnsih to seal the paint.
After you prime let it cure for about 12-24 hours. once you paint all you base colors but before you wash the model, you can use a Gloss cote or Pledge Klear to seal the model. This also gives reduce surface tension and helps your washes flow. Then after you wash the model, do you decals, etc... Hit it with the Matte Cote and the sheen will go away. Now you have 2 seals on you model.
