My sons want to add Ven Dreadnoughts to their lists.
One wants TwinLas/Missile, the other wants 2 Twin Autocannons

We'll be getting 1 Ven Dread and 1 Regular Dread because the Ven dread has plenty of extras to make both Venerable, but doesn't come with the Missles.

I was going though my bits for the Twin Autocannons, but could only find 2 sets of Predator Heavy Bolter sponsons.
Stacked together they look good and decently sized for Dread arms. But they are obviously Heavy Bolters

I could extent the barrels, but I don't have good muzzle bits. I also think it would look cool with the Assault cannon barrels
My son plays Salamanders, and since they are master smiths, I feel like there is some wiggle room for unique design.
Would 2 Twin Heavy Bolters, or Assault cannons that have been "Master Crafted" pass as Autocannons?
Or rather, could I say that they are 2 Master Crafted Assault Cannons that use the rules for Twin Autocannons?

Any other suggestions?

The autocannons from the Aegis defense lines are a five minute conversion and the walls are nice for terrain. I can get pics when I get home from work.

that costs over $30 and robs the Aegis itself of its gun, thereby making it useless as anything other than terrain (which is admittedly tempting)

I like the suggestion and appreciate it, but I'm not looking to spend anything on this. Or rather, my boys will be buying these Dreads with their allowance and don't have enough to also buy the Aegis.

And besides, my son who is getting this Dread has a thing for "mini-guns" which the Assault cannon obviously is.
I am leaning heavy towards just slapping the Dread Assault cannons (which are way bigger than normal Assautl cannons) onto the HB sponsons and using them as "Master Crafted" Assault cannons that use the rules for Twin Autocannons

Where will they be playing?

You can pretty much do whatever "counts-as" that you like.

These are my dreads that can be run with varying assortment of assault cannon, autocannon and missile launchers.

For the goliath I also used predator sponsors as a base and added sentinel bits to the front to make them obviously autocannon. You could probably also do that with guard infantry autocannon, which you can surely get for pocket money levels of investment.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Platicard rod, and plasticard tube to fit snugly over the tube. Makes for a good barrel and muzzle. I did it a while ago as a lascannon, if I can fit it, ill show you what I mean. The nice thing about imperial weapons is that they are all pretty boxy and generic looking really.

Thanks for all the replies! A lot to take in. I definitely want a longer barrel than the HB, but I don't want to buy anything further (like plastic rods, etc).

I'll have 2 Assault cannons and 1 Twin Lascannon.
I like the idea of modeling these as "Master Crafted Assault cannons" that 'count as' Twin Autocannons.
But I am open to other ideas. What do you think of using the 1 Lascannon per side, with a blunted muzzle, adding onto the double HBs?

Of course, it would leave the second HB either above or below.

Got it built. Photos include comparisions to my own Twin-Autocannon Dread conversion and the (rather tiny in comparison) regular Assault cannon:

@Galef

Looking good. Not super taken by the Lego bits added as.muzzle.extensions, but with a lick of paint they will.probably blend in fine. The sponsons actually blend in to the arm mount rather well
