And i plan on using a mix of kits such as loyalist marines and chaos. Do need some advice on how to deface the loyalist iconography.

Not too bad. Maybe invest in some inks to give the model some shadows. I'd make the trims brass rather than silver aswell. Not only is that their Canon colours, but it gives a nicer contrast against the dark blue.

Ah ok. a little bit of advice for the lightning bolts, get a very light green, i'm talking super light like gauss blaster edge green. and mix it with your blue (I'm assuming youre using Kantor Blue) in steadily increasing amounts, apply this in very small quantities to the area your bolts want to be. once you've created subtle highlights mark out your bolts using a very light mix..basically pure GBG. your lines need to be super fine, almost wisps, with the finest of connections between the forks. then over this literally just tickle the lines with pure white. this will give you nice fine lightning bolts that look a lot more realistic.

I'll have to try that. I have a bunch of old models to practice on till i start getting my new stuff built. So for now im happy with the knowledge they will be better by the time im starting my new models.

its quite an advanced technique but looks good on night lords. yeah get practicing your highlights on the old models. blue highlights up really nice. the gauss blaster green i mentioned before, or alternatively, baharroth blue edge paints work really well when you transition then up from kantor blue.
Konrad curze armour here is kantor transitioned up using baharroth blue then guilliman blue glaze to smooth the transitions.

KK and i do notice my highlights are a little thick. Im going to use a different brush next model. I also realize I'm never going to be golden demon. But I will get better and maybe faster.

You can get to demon standard! Just keep practicing. Once you get used to that thin paint you'll be fine. It'll come with time.

OK new thing to work on. My gold will not come out smoothing even if i thin it down. Am thinking i am either using too bright a gold to start or GW gold sucks.

You need to work your gold up from a darker colour. Either use a copper, then brass, then gold sequence, which is good as if you leave some of the dark tones it will look realistic. Alternatively, you could base with a brown, then mix in a brass, then gold, which will give you a true metallic metal style.

I find a darker copper/bronze looks better than shiny bright gold on NL. I'd also suggest using a purple shading wash (such as thinned Druchii Violet) in the recesses and around rivets, as it improves the contrast and gives a more 'ancient' look.
EDIT: Here's a video of Mr Two-Thin-Coats using the technique on a SoS's armour. That's the sort of dark bronze colour that works well for the metal banding on NL power armour, IMO.

That looks good. I'd maybe paint the skull in bone colours, rather than having the 2 contrasting metals on his armour.

Maybe ill repaint it later. But i finished another terminator. So I am slowly figuring out what i'm doing. Gold is now retributor armor then a sepia wash and a highlight of auric gold. After everything is painted i hit it with a matte varnish.

For edge highlights, use the brush perpendicular (90 degrees to) to the edge. You want to transition those up to so you've got almost white at points where the light would reflect from. Use a very small amount of thinned paint and work up in faint layers.

Yeah ill work on the highlights over time. Second hand models are great for practice. But till i get my next paycheck cant really paint because i never paint a model i cant varnish after. Cant stand rubbing paint off. But i have a tactical squad most of a squad of chaos marines a friend gave me and my 4 remaining raptors to build and prime. Be doing a lot of work though so been busy.

And i have a neat idea for cultists. Going to use orcs that worship night lords as apostles of mork and gork. This idea stems from a character i was playing in dark heresy. My night lord was stranded on an ork world for a long period of time due to warp storms. Got bored and decided to mes with orks to see if he could make them worship him and his warband. Worked now he is seeding them on other ork worlds for gaks and giggles.
