Hi all,

About to put in a paint order, so I can finally get cracking with my chaos marines. I'm going for a Deathworld Forest base colour, and I want to stick with that as the dominant one overall, and give all of them a nurgle theme.

I've been looking at the citadel paint chart, and it looks like either highlighting with elysian green and ogryn camo, or a drybrush of underhive ash, then a wash are the recommended ways of highlighting this colour.
I'm kind of new still to painting weather-beaten and worn looks, and am slightly cautious about using edge highlights, as I feel like it'll make them come out too clean. (FYI I plan on liberal uses of green and brown washes, a bit of rust/typhus corrosion effect, and some good old fashioned chipping too) However, I do want to paint on chipping, and I'm not sure how to achieve this other than with highlights.

Drybrushing, meanwhile, is something I don't have a ton of experience with, and certainly nowhere near this scale. Has anyone done the underhive ash method, and if you did, how did it go? I've only got about a month left in the country at this point, and would like these guys to be as finished as I can make them, before heading off on yet another foolhardy adventure, so drybrushing is appealing...
Has anyone ever mixed the two? Is the contrast particularly stark?

Also, anyone have tips for painting a rougher, more battered scheme?

Cheers for your help!

You still want some edge highlights, as this helps show light placement. Your weathering will give you the weathered look (oddly enough) for chipping you can use an old gummed up brush, or torn up sponge. You want a contrasting colour to your base, so a dark brown would probably work on top of light green. Apply this at the end of your painting process. You could always drybrush your highlights up to a very light, almost beige green which will give a more worn look, and give nice contrast opportunity for chipping.

If you have mournfang brown you can water that down and use it as a rusty wash in crevices and chain mail etc.

Weathering powders are always worth using in my opinion too, although this will obviously incur extra expenses, unless you have some make up powders or chalks lying around, which can be scraped into powder and used for interesting effects.

Cool, okay, sounds pretty much as I expected - you've piqued my curiosity with the weathering powders, though, what do you use? Making my own is probably a bit high-level, haha, but I've always wondered...

Watered down mornfang brown is an absolute favorite of mine, though!

I use powders from forge world, mig, and humbrol, but they're all the same really.

Making your own is easy.. You just scrape a blade down whatever it is. You could even use dried mud itself. Just ensure it's ground down into a fine enough powder.

I just apply with a soft brush and leave, as that gives the purest effect, but it depends on how much handling its going to receive.

A nice rust powder works well dusted into the fine details over the MF brown.

Another thing I forgot to mention is using oil paints to create streaking effects, that's a nice technique also.

I’ve only just started to paint mine, but I used a Deathworld Forest Base.

All they’ve had on them so far is an Agrax wash, so still highlighting and such to decide on and tackle.
But already I’m liking the colour/shade to them..

Cheers for the input! Let me know how the highlighting goes - it's really useful to see a model in the flesh, so thanks for posting this!

Yeah I’ve literally been looking for weeks to see what it looks like, then just finally got round to it.
I wasn’t sure what wash to do and was looking for examples, I have Athonian but I thought it’d be too green then, and it was between Agrax and Reikland Fleshshade for a less deep shade to them, but went with the Agrax in the end..
