Thought I'd share this, I went through my old marines and found an awful lot of metal models. So many, in fact, they could easily form an all-metal allies detachment.

I chucked them all in a tub and got the acetone on them. Pic 1 is what's there, pic 2 is the result after 10 seconds. Poor old Arihman (top right of the box) had so much paint on him he was practically fizzing!

didn't get a pic this morning but it was deep, opaque purple, and I could see a lot of bare metal. If I get the chance tonight, it'll be out with the toothbrush! Then there's even more old metal artrocities to go in when I go through the Chaos marines properly!

well, it's been in there all night and looks likely to be in there all weekend too, so whatever happens, it'll only be metal coming out!

Is this 100% pure acetone you're using?

Oh good, I was worried you were about to share a horror story with me (and me 7 hours away from getting back to them!). From what I've heard acetone does nothing to metal. I had to find a PP or HDPE tub for it, as it'll dissolve a few other plastics!

I can say that as soon as I poured it in, when I sloshed it back & for the I was seeing paint floating off of the models. By now they probably don't even need scrubbing

Awesome.
I've used strippers before on metal but none that strong that there was almost instant dissolving

Do you have to wear gloves or anything with pure acetone?

I will be wearing gloves; this stuff stinks, and has the same sort of properties as petrol - and anyone who's gotten that on their hands can attest to the difficulties in getting the smell back out!

I have nitrile gloves, which boast a 4-minute resistance to acetone. I plan to pull them out with pliers or tweezers or a hook or something, and then scrub them with water, minimising the contact time with the acetone. I'll be double-gloving as well, so when one layer goes I'll swap them both out. Also, safety glasses!!!

Get yourself some marigold gloves instead, they will resist acetone.

Yeah you want a rubber based product for corrosives like that, nitriles are more for protecting against POL contamination

When it comes to PPE (gloves, goggles, etc) for paint stripping - anything you would be wearing for acetone, you *SHOULD* be wearing for stuff like Dettol or simple green, too.

You don't want ANY of them in your eyes and dettol when used neat from the bottle WILL remove skin after as brief as a 2 minute soak.

Did 25 minutes of scrubbing before bed last night. There are a few models in there which are very stubborn, typically the middle-aged ones with purplish pain on them. Purple seems to be a stubborn colour. They've gone back in to soak!

Rubber marigolds worked a treat, no signs of any dissolving!

The terminator (now headless) turned out to have a plastic head. It stretched a good 4" before it broke away! Don't use Acetone on plastic kids! (I wonder if that was the inspiration for chaos spawn... )

Tell me about it, one of my gloves ripped when I was scrubbing in dettol and the skin on my fingers wrinkled and proceeded to peel for the next week after that.

Well done OP on some crisp metal models!

I used dettol to strip a Blood Warrior a couple of days ago with dettol and usually I do wear rubber gloves I didn't this time though and my right hand has lots of peeling skin.

So lesson learnt. Rubber up!
