So when Looncurse and the Contrast paint releases hit so close together. I decided to attempt to paint my new Gloomspite Gitz army using nothing but contrast paints, and the occasional highlight or drybrush if I felt it was needed.
So after much building and priming. The paint work begins!
I used wraithbone as my primer, and I started with Blood Angels red for the squigs. I do not have good brush control and contrast paints only highlighted this. So after taking some time to clean up my messy bits, I made the first fatal error of the day. I decided to paint the teeth (skeleton horde) before I painted the gums (Volupus Pink). In my head, this made perfect sense however in practice, it did not work. So I will probably have to go back in for major touch-ups next time I sit down to paint. I'll try to document more of this and better in the future. This little blog will hopefully keep me motivated and not stick the project on the backburner as I do with so many others when I start to lose interest.
Currently, I only have 1 or 2 days a week to devote to painting. so my next update probably won't be til next week.

Good start on the squigs, the contrast paints look like they were made for this kind of minis. Looking forward to see how you are going to do the gobbos too

Today's Update covers day 2 and 3 of painting.
On day 2 I ended up finishing the squigs (though I didn't know it at the time). Touched up all the spillover from last week, and reapplied the contrast to the teeth and gums where it needed up, I also noticed some spots on the undersides where I missed red and hit those. Then I moved onto the base details and the mushrooms. I had no idea what I wanted to do here. So I just started pulling random colors and trying to see what stuck. I ended up using Magos Purple and Terradon Turquoise for the mushroom caps, and Apothecary White for the stems. Then I used Volupus Pink for the Slug and Skeleton Horde for the shell, for the weird crab creature I used Iyanden yellow for the moon face and Space Wolves Grey for the body. I planned to go back on Day 3 and do some final touch-ups and possibly even highlight or drybrush if needed to finish these guys off. However to my surprise when I got to my paint station the next morning. The colors had dried in such a way that I felt the models all passed the 3-Foot rule and I decided to just base them and move on.
The bulk of day 3 was spent on the first of two Loonboss on Giant Cave Squig models. I actually found this guy way easier to paint with contrast paints, and honestly if I had more time to paint I probably could have knocked him out entirely. I was about an hour short on time for finishing him with the touchups and drying time factored in.

Forgot to say yesterday. I'm trying to decide how I want to mark the different squads.
Right now I'm planning to paint the rims of the bases different colors. With a black stripe to break them up. So if I want to run all 20 squig herds a together then I just say "red bases are 1 group" but if I break them up then I say "red bases with 1 and 2 stripes are a squad, and 3 and 4 stripes is the other squad".
Then I started thinking about the squads moving forward, and I was like "ooh what if I painted my squigs different colors as well?" so If I ever get more squig hoppers, then they would be purple squig hoppers in addition to the painted bases.
However, right now I only have one model that would be a different color squig, my second loonboss on cave squig. I don't know if I will ever actually own enough squigs to make the various color things actually work. (especially since there's no apocalypse for AOS)
What do you guys think? Also what is the standard squad size for things like the hoppers and bounders? Full? Half?

Got just a little bit more work done this week. Managed to finish off both of my Loonbosses. I also decided to go ahead and do the second Loonboss on a different colored squig. Shylish Purple came out way darker than I was expecting. However, I'm not upset with how it looks in person (the pictures are much darker than reality. My friends are saying I should dry brush with a lighter purple to make the details pop, however, I'm not great at dry brushing/highlighting and contrast paints are tough enough to clean up I'm hesitant to do it.
Next week I guess I am starting on the Squig Hoppers. Unless the new fire emblem takes over my life.

The purple does come off dark in here but in the closeups it looks excellent! And the pink for the tongues works really well

Thanks! I'm surprised how quickly I'm getting through these models. The contrast paints really do work wonders. Unfortunately for me, once the squigs are done I have to do the Warhammer Underworlds characters. Who are going to take a lot more time and effort to nail down. Those bases have so much detail on them. let alone the characters themselves.

Didn't get any painting done this week. However, I did get my first game in.
It was pretty one-sided. 1000 points on either side, I just ran everything from the two looncurse boxes. He brought 1000 points of Khorne models. That Khorne terrain piece basically made it so that his prayers and judgements went off every turn. He was dealing 20 mortal wounds every turn and just deleting units left and right. Now that I know how it works, I can think of ways that I could have tried to delete the casters on turn 2, however it would have been difficult. I also think we might have been playing some rules wrong. I'm gonna do a deep dive in the rules this week to see if we made mistakes and how I can fix them.

More photos!
This week I finished the actual Goblin Herders for the squig herd and started on my boingrot bounders. I gotta say, I am still loving contrast paints. I'm averaging about 2 hours per model on the booingrot bounders. I'm going one at a time on them rather than batch painting like I did with the squig herd.
