Hey friends, I’m trying out contrast because I have so many damn armies I’d love to get one finished real quick to start getting through them.

Here’s the first soldier in my Free Cities Empire army as a test for the scheme. Would love for some opinions

Looks solid.

Just looking at the pictures, not seeing if I can zoom in closer for more detail, it looks fine. What you have in hand is a great looking table top mini. Put him and a few dozen of his closest friends on a battlefield, and they will serve you well.

Now I can’t see the details on his face. Or any of those other little things that help elevate a table-top standard to an excellent one. But I like the colors you have picked, the quartered scheme, and the tidy job you have done.

Thanks Nevelon for the feedback. Yeah I can tell you’d have to put in a lot more effort with these paints to get beyond tabletop standard.
I think I’ll reserve showcase level for the leaders and special units like Gryph Knights, gotta get that General on Gryphon looking swish.

Is he all Contrast but the metals? And a quartered scheme no less. I'm impressed, and he'll look great with a bunch of his mates.

Looks good, but yeah the pic is a little on the small side.

EDIT: The clicking wasn't loading. Now I can click on it - yeah looks good. All you need to ask yourself: was it cheap, and was it efficient?

Looks good, but I'd give it a light wash of brown at the crevices to tie it all up.

Ah thanks everyone!

@Elbows - It wasn’t super cheap, these contrast paints certainly cost a bit each, though compared to getting normal citadel colors that dry up and spill out the pot everywhere and dry up on the pallet (unless you have a wet pallet), you save more paint, and you don’t need to fork out for shades, so it probably ends up cheaper than normal.

@Skchsan - I was thinking about doing this, as it’d make them a little muckier too and look more like they’ve been fighting. I might do it later when I’ve done more.

Also, here’s a whole block of 10 I managed to get done in about 5 hours, most of that time spent on painting the metal and doing the bases. Considering my old method took 2 days to finish 10 of these guys, I’d call that a plus haha. The quartering is certainly tougher using a shade brush though, may need to work out a cleaner way of doing that.

Exalted for doing the community a great service! These are nice, high-res images of contrast paint. Honestly, they look really good, I think you've made a really smart choice using them for cloth, and the quartering is very smartly done.

Faces look very natural too, I'm sure these will be very useful for people contemplating the contrast plunge.

If you’re concerned about the quartering on the shields, you could always try taking a liner with black, for example, to create a clean line between the colours that would more sharply define the quadrants.

@Greatbigtree - That’s a good idea, I might try that.

Nice looking regiment. As you stated, the shields are a bit...off? But they're flat surfaces so your minis are just highlighting where Contrast works and where it's a bit less awesome. The feathers and the laced arms, etc. all look really good. It just falls a bit on the shields with the quartering, etc.

Still looks excellent, and easily beyond tabletop standard.

Thanks Elbows, yeah I’ll either leave it as is if I can’t be bothered (most likely lol) or I’ll take the suggestion of drawing a line afterwards with darker paint or even just painting the shields normally.

But yeah I’m quite impressed with contrast paint, I expected them to come out looking like Skittles, but the darker browns and things come out how you’d want and the shading works well.

I'm finding that Contrast Paints do require a little skill to use effectively. However, I think your model looks good.

Damn. This is one of the better units ive seen with contrast paints. Still haven't tried them as I don't really see that much of a time saver over airbrush.

These models do look good, and seem to be a solid choice for contrast since they have lots of rigids, and few flat surfaces.

The only thing I would suggest is NOT using the contrast on the shields, and using actual base/layer paint for that part since they are relatively flat.

Did you do anything else with these? Like highlights? Picking out details etc??? or is this pure contrast?

Well done.
