So after many years not playing or painting I am back after 24 years, im now 36 (gulp where did that go) and whilst I have had time away I have always had a soft spot for 40k burried deep away somewhere - I bought a space hulk set in 2014 and also a dark vengeance set.

Im abit confused about warhammer 40k and overwhelmed with all the rules - I dont acctualy have anyone local to play with so for now I will paint (with the plan to maybe pop down to the local wargaming center and get a feel for the place in time)

So I have decided to make a go of painting the space hulk minis - From when I left in 1995 all i can say is WOW the quality of the models has advanced so so much - when I saw these i knew i had to have them even if i wasnt ready to do anything with them there and then.

So here we go, I am really going to take my time with these so progress will be slow.

I am following a youtube tutorial by strikingscorpion82

I have started with chaos black spray and then used Mephiston red spray - in the tutorial army painter red was used So i have just realised im going to need to highlight in different colours but will have to try and fuigure that one out as I go along. For now I am just focusing on taking time and being as neat as i can be.

Oh, these models have made me see my eyesight isnt quite as good as it was back then lol, and wow, these blown up images really show up the mistakes!

Cheers stormatious!

Today I got a fair bit done, did grey on the shoulderpad, it was a right pain as the paint i had was a "dry" paint and i had to water it down loads, a couple of mistakes there that I will have to try and fix later, I also tidyed up the metallics.

Got the gems first colour done, these have been by far the most challenging thing to do!

Progress today on the backs of the knees, foot grills, and inner elbows, also some purity seals and the eyes - the eyes were really challenging and im not totally happy with them, the shape of terminator eyes seems harder to paint than standard space marines - highlighting the eyes may well be a step to far for my abilities but will try none the less.

Good luck. Space Hulk is one of my favourite sets, I loved painting them. As you can maybe see from my profile pic.

There are some more good painting tips here.

Welcome back to the hobby! I’m with you that WH40k (the environment) seems way more complex than it did in the 90s even if they simplified some of the game rules. There are just so many books with different rules in different places it is hard to keep up with.

Your model looks fantastic for your first one in 2+ decades! Keep it up.

Thanks The riddle of steel (love that film btw watched it last week, best score ever!) I have to be honest I have put my all into this model - but i am really pleased with the results so far.

Quite a subtle change for today's post, i realized i had missed a whole bit of cloth on the chest plate to had to do that, and have also put down a second coat of paint from the pot (before was just the Mephiston red spray) its was a good chance to try and correct some mistakes like on the gun vent, the eye and near the elbow back.

Onto highlighting next

Ok, had a bit more free time today so did some highlighting with evil sunz scarlet. I think I may have gone a tad thick with it in places though! will either bring back with mephiston red - or mix ESS with mephiston to ease the transition.

Today i have done highlighting on the gems, eyes and shoulder sensor - i feel this is beyond the limit of my ability for now, my gems at the front seem better than the ones at the back - i guess consistancy will come with time hopefully

The gem work looks good. What's left? Will you be adding more highlights to the red?

Thank you youwashock

I need to highlight the purity seals and do the scrollwork, need to do some highlighting on the black of the powerfist, and then make a decision about extra highlighting, part of my thinks a very fine highlight og troll slayer orange will make it pop nicely but the other half thinks that i kinda like the orange free look also. I am undecided on that one!

It seemed like an awful lot of red at first- but wow! the detailing you've added has really made this piece pop!

I think your gems came out very well- that's something I'm still trying to learn how to do.

Well done.

Thank you Meer_cat - honestly i felt uncontrolled doing them, but they definitely look better than plain i think

Brother Deino is now complete! In the end i did some final highlighting with a 50/50 mix of evil sunz scarlet and troll slayer orange. , i felt this was more appropriate for the base color than pure troll slayer would be.

I will be making a post in the showcase section. (has more photos and different angles) - https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/779635.page

Thanks for reading I will be doing another one soon.

Nice! The whole bunch painted like this will really be something. I like that you got some scribbles on all the purity seals. If you are concerned with going too orange with your highlights on the red you can try mixing your base color with some bone/fleshtone/unbleached titanium. It gets you a decent contrast without going too orange or pink.

Thanks youwashock! they were really tough to do those purity seals, I would like to get my writing smaller but we are talking such micro scale there that im not sure how much I can do that lol. Thanks for the tip I will also give that a go.

just trying to decide whp to do next now! Sergeant Lorenzo concerns me as i have never done skintone before.. Sergeant Gideons storm shield looks quite a challenge! I will probably do them in difficulty level starting with the easiest first, so next up will be Brother Omnio!

They are such cool models, I found this one very rewarding to do.

I have a old can of purity seal to varnish with but after reading some horror stories i am now wondering what to do there.
