I am sculpting flames for my Black Orc army (on their standards and some hand held torches) and I plan to just use a mishmash of colors on them. I think both of your schemes look great, just go with them both!

I prefer the yellow. The red looks a bit flat.
As hobby-snobbish as it sounds, it’s hard to judge a mini, without a finished base. The yellow might look garrish with a scrubland base, while the red would seem out of place on a lush green base.
That said! Part of the reason the red doesn’t work as well as the yellow is the colours aren’t broken up by changing the elbow / knee armour. It looks more like a colour blob, because it is more like a colour blob. A mini like that would need sharper contrast between pieces (like a Nuln oil wash between gauntlet and elbow pad) to help break it up more.

Most people said red and it was the warclan whose rules I kind of like more so I went with that. That said I’ve changed the color of the pants and cloth in general to be a blue. That frees me to up to potentially hit the knees and elbows in black if the newly colored straps don’t do enough. I should have the first five refined ones done Tuesday morning to share.
Bases Will be done. Current plans are fairly barren with the brown crackle paint and some spots of grass and occasional skulls.

The one comment I would throw out at you, Aduro, is to potentially do a bit of a graphite rub/ metallic weathering on the red armor plates where they would rub together. Just something light to not overpower the red but still make it feel used.
Looking forward to see what you do for the whole force!

Definitely progressing slower with these than I would prefer. I blame BBC’s new War of the Worlds series. Primarily just need to get the yellow patterns on their armor, and then do the bases, but some touch ups here and there are also required. Try and get them done tomorrow.

They look good, Aduro!
The only thing I'd say as a critique is that the armor could use some more definition between the plates in some spots.

Yeah, that’s some of the touching up I have to do. This is the first stuff I’ve used Contrast on so there’s a learning curve.

As a note, Black Templar.
9:1 ratio of Medium to Black Templar, detail or fine detail brush. It really does a great job adding a line without overpowering everything.
That's how they did all the lines in the armor here.

Ok, on the one hand the Orks themselves are done. On the other hand I think I may dig thru my bits and see how many helmetless Ork heads I’ve got from various kits and see about swapping those out. The nice contrast of green on the boss helps break up the red more. Plus the ‘Ardboyz are the only ones in the Ironjawz range who wear helmets anyways...
For the bases, I thought my box of basing materials was in my car but it wasn’t so I didn’t have the grass tufts to put down. They won’t all get grass regardless so I went ahead and tried out the badlands technique I’m copying from one Casey Weston, and I’d say it went pretty well. Find my supply of grass and bone bits and do the rest tomorrow.
Also started the Warchanter next and made decent headway on him. Being it’s just one model I’ll probably have that mostly done tomorrow as well.

So redid the heads and got the Warchanter all finished up. Definitely like the green heads much better than the helmets.
Yet still their bases are not quite done. More experimenting with the cracked earth paint and how long that takes to dry kept me from finishing that up completely.

Is it the GW cracked paint or another company?
The GW stuff can be accelerated by using a hair dryer blowing cool air if you want to test it.

Indeed the GW Aggrellian [sp] Earth texture paint. Only hairdryer I got doesn’t have a non hot setting. Would just a regular little fan be something that’d work?

Sadly not
The reason you set it to "cool" is that you still get a little bit of heat, but it won't overpower anything.

For the record, the only Contrast paints used here are Blood Angels Red over the blood red Army Painter primer, and Basilicanum Grey over the silver metalics. Basically just kind of using them as washes rather than single coats.

Actually that’s a photography issue caused by too much sunlight. All my pictures tend to end up day glow. I swear they are not this bright in person.

Ah, I just liked them bright like that. Also I love contrast gray over metals, I’m using it as a wash over my AT scale stuff.

One full unit of ‘Ard Boyz plus the Warchanter finished. The new ‘Ard Boyz are the ones to the right of the Warchanter in the photo. I would like to find some Ork decals for the banner, but for the moment it’s just blue.
Next up will be the Boar Cavalry, but I need to take a short break to get my Warhammer Underworlds stuff up to date and ready for the event this weekend. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Did get these guys Started today since I didn’t bring my Underworlds with me to go thru and got those ‘Ardboyz finished so early. Skin and fur on the boars themselves done, and got one rider’s armor base coated.

Did you glue those guys on or leave them separate? I just looked at them last night to spray today and I’m wishing I hadn’t glued the riders on. :(

I almost never leave parts separate before painting. My general philosophy is if I can’t get a brush in there it didn’t need to be painted anyways.
