So im painting a gold dragon for out dnd campaign and was just wondering if a gloss finish would look good on it. The added protection would be nice too. Before anyone says anything i know its not the right model for a gold dragon but it is what i was given to paint. Also turned out a bit more brassy/coppery but the guy is happy with the colours.

I wouldn't gloss it. Use matte or satin.

Wouldn't a matte finish kill the shine of the metallics? I dont currently have a satin finish to try unfortunately.

I have heard of applying ard coat and then lahmian medium to dull it, does that work?

Matte will affect the metallic yes, but not that much. I find it improves the look as metallics are often sparkly due to the flakes in the pigment.

A matte finish will kill shine that's based on the smoothness of the surface - such as if you've gloss varnished or used a glossy paint, then matte over the top of it. Most of what makes metallic paints 'metallic' is the fine flake in the paint, which is less affected. Any shine due to the surface finish will be killed off, but the metallic paint will still look metallic - if maybe a little duller.

I wouldn’t use anything on the final metalic coat, you could seal the primer or the base coat, I just use a gloss wash and that gives it a good enough protection for plastic, after the wash just basically re base coat it with your metallic leaving some of the shades from the wash and highlight from there and it should be fine, any type of sealer on metalic ruins it

Not sure what sealer you've been using but you should probably find a new one.
